ATIV S Doesn't Mean Guaranteed Success for Microsoft Windows Phone 8, Samsung

The ATIV S, the first Windows Phone 8-powered smartphone unveiled Thursday by Samsung, likely won't translate into ballooning market share for devices running on Microsoft's new operating system.

Analysys Mason, the global research and consulting firm, says Microsoft must quadruple its quarterly Windows Phone shipments to have a major impact in the smartphone market by the end of the year. Among smartphone operating systems, Microsoft's Windows 7 and Windows Mobile only held a humble 3.5 percent market share in the second quarter with shipments of 5.4 million devices, according to IDC figures.

The first Windows Phone 8 smartphone also will "face tough competition" from Apple's pending sixth-generation iPhone and the Galaxy S3, Samsung's popular device running on Android, wrote Ronan de Renesse, a principal analyst with Analysys Mason.

Still, Samsung's new phone is no design dud.

"The device has an elegant industrial design, is powered by the highest hardware specifications on the market?? including dual-core processor, HD display , high memory capacity?? and comes packed with the latest connectivity solutions and feature-sets," wrote Malik Saadi, principal analyst with Informa Telecoms & Media.

"The investment made to produce this phone suggests that Samsung is now taking the Windows Phone ecosystem seriously and could return to a multi-OS strategy, something that the South Korean giant had adopted for years in the past," the analyst added.

Saadi pointed out some features that are missing in the smartphone, which could hurt Samsung: namely lack of CDMA and LTE. Due to no LTE, Saadi wrote, the ATIV S could see limited success in several markets, including the United States, Japan, South Korea and parts of Western Europe.

Andy Roddick's Retirement News Conference - NYTimes.com

?If there were rankings for press conferences, I wouldn?t have to worry about dropping out of the top five, I hope.? -- Andy Roddick after being routed by Roger Federer in the 2007 Australian Open semifinals (video above).

Much will be written and said about his place in tennis in the next week, but yes, Roddick was also known for his wit and candor at news conferences. The one Thursday in which he announced his coming retirement was no exception.

Throughout his career, he has been intensely serious on the court but has been able not to take himself too seriously off it.

What will you remember about Roddick?s career?

Below is the news conference transcript, as provided by the United States Open Web site. The video can be found here.

ANDY RODDICK:? Thank you all for coming.? I?ll make this short and sweet. ?I?ve decided that this is going to be my last tournament.

TIM CURRY:? Questions?

Q.? Why now?

ANDY RODDICK:? I just feel like it?s time.? I don?t know that I?m healthy enough or committed enough to go another year.? I?ve always wanted to, in a perfect world, finish at this event.? I have a lot of family and friends here.? I?ve thought all year that I would know when I got to this tournament. ?When I was playing my first round, I knew.

Q.? Is it something you?ve been wrestling with for days, weeks, or months?

ANDY RODDICK:? Yeah, it?s been a process.? It?s certainly not days.? I don?t know that I would have had you all come in here and waste your time if it had been days. ?You know, certain parts throughout the year, I?ve thought about it.? You know, just with the way my body feels, with the way that I?m able to feel like I?m able to compete now, I don?t know that it?s good enough. ?I don?t know that I?ve ever been someone who?s interested in existing on tour.? I have a lot of interests and a lot of other things that excite me.? I?m looking forward to those.

Q.? Is there any way to quantify how much the health issue is versus the mental and emotional issue?

ANDY RODDICK:? It?s tough to say.? It?s kind of chicken or egg.? How much of mental fatigue is because you don?t feel like you can do what you want to do physically?? You don?t know where it starts. ?But it?s tough to put a number.

Q.? You?ve been talking about this for a couple years.? We?ve talked about 30 is not that old in tennis.? Obviously Federer is 30.? You?ve been a good athlete, very competitive.? In a sense, you?re sort of retiring early, no?

ANDY RODDICK:? Now you?re saying that (smiling)?

Q.? Yes.

ANDY RODDICK:? Well, it?s good.? I didn?t want to make it through this press conference without a direct comparison to Roger, so thank you for that. ?I don?t know, necessarily.? A number is a number.? But I think wear and tear and miles is something that?s not really an age thing.? You know, if you look at my contemporaries that started with me, Roger is the only one that?s still going and still going strong. ?It?s a matter of how I feel.? I feel like I?m able to compete at the highest level.? Frankly, these guys have gotten really, really, really good.? I?m not sure that with compromised health that I can do what I want to do right now.

Q.? I?m assuming the high point is 2003 here.? So good place to bow out.

ANDY RODDICK:? I don?t know.? I don?t know.? I don?t view it in a scope of where you had your best win.? I?ve had a lot of different memories.? I?ll certainly look back.? I feel like I?d be cheating the other memories if I said one was the highlight. ?You know, I feel like I?ve been very lucky.? That?s certainly not lost on me.

Q.? You mentioned other projects.? What projects would you like to do now that the tennis career is coming to an end?

ANDY RODDICK:? Well, immediately we announced yesterday or the day before we?re building, with my foundation, a youth tennis and learning center in Austin.? I?d like to be hands on with that and not see it periodically.? I?d like to be kind of on?site every day.? There?s some other projects, kind of side projects, that I?ve been doing. ?Those excite me a lot right now.? So I?m looking forward to it.

Q.? How emotional is this for you?? I know you like to make light of things.? Now that it?s final for you, how emotional is it?? What was it about that first?round match that clicked?

ANDY RODDICK:? I don?t know.? On some big moments this year, I think I?ve known.? You know, walking off at Wimbledon, I felt like I knew.? Playing here, I don?t know what it was.? I couldn?t imagine myself being there in another year. ?I?ve always, for whatever my faults have been, felt like I?ve never done anything halfway.? Probably the first time in my career that I can sit here and say I?m not sure that I can put everything into it physically and emotionally.? I don?t know that I want to disrespect the game by coasting home.? I had plans to play a smaller schedule next year.? But the more I thought about it, I think you either got to be all in or not.? You know, that?s more kind of the way I?ve chosen to do things.

Q.? Is there an emotional element to this?? You?ve sat alone and thought about it, talked to family?

ANDY RODDICK:? Yeah, I mean, I?ve had some hard conversations with Brooke this year, with Doug and Larry.? You know, it was Brooke and I?s little secret over the last couple days.? I talked to Larry and Doug today. ?We had talked about it throughout the year, obviously.? Talked to a bunch of my friends that are here.? It?s time.

Q.? What do you think you?ll miss the most?? You?ve been doing this a long time.

ANDY RODDICK:? All of you (smiling). ?I?m not sure.? You know, I?m lucky enough, there are a lot of players where I live.? I don?t think I?m one of the guys who won?t pick up a racquet for three years.? You know, I still love the innocent parts of the game.? I love hitting tennis balls.? I love seeing the young guys do well. ?I?ll still have a lot of friends to watch.? I?ll miss the relationships probably the most.? As time passes, I?ll probably miss the tennis more.? But immediately that?s probably the thing that is toughest for me.

Q.? Why not wait until after your final match, your birthday?? Did you want to give the fans an opportunity?

ANDY RODDICK:? Those are good reasons.? I think I wanted an opportunity to say good?bye to people, as well.? I don?t know how tomorrow?s going to go.? I hope it goes well and I hope I?m sticking around.? I just imagine being off the court tomorrow in an empty locker room. ?I think I wanted a chance to say good?bye.? Also, if I do run into some emotions tomorrow or in four days or however long, I don?t want people to think I?m a little unstable, or more unstable (smiling).? That?s why I came to this decision.

Q.? You are playing under the lights on Ashe tomorrow for potentially what could be the last time.? What do you anticipate your emotions will be?

ANDY RODDICK:? I have no idea.? I have no idea.? I talked to Larry and Doug and said, I could come out and play great, or it could be the worst thing you?ve ever seen.? I don?t know.? I?ve never done this before. ?I?m sure it will be very emotional.? I?m sure I?ll still be nervous.? I don?t know.

Q.? Did Ken?s passing at all in any outside way sort of influence where you are, in this decision at all, where you are in the game?

ANDY RODDICK:? Maybe. ?I don?t know.? Ken was certainly a huge, huge part of everything for me.? He believed in me from very early on.? You know, that certainly wasn?t easy for me. ?But, you know, his wife and his daughter are going to come up, so that will be really nice to have them here.

Q.? Do you take any example from any athlete you?ve ever seen who knew the right time to retire?

ANDY RODDICK:? I think the thing that you guys have to understand is there?s not going to be a general rule.? It?s not because you have a certain age next to your name that that?s it.? There are a lot of different personalities.? Some people just want to play until they can?t play anymore, until they?re pushed out just by ranking, or they can?t get into tournaments. ?I don?t think it?s fair to maybe generalize this moment for people.? Different people tick in different ways.? I don?t know that I looked at anybody else?s scenario when thinking about this ?cause I don?t know that I could pretend to relate to whatever they were thinking at a given moment.

Q.? Like any top American athlete, you?re praised, you?re criticized.? What are you most proud of in your run, your career?? If you could point to one or two things that you might have changed, what would that be?

ANDY RODDICK:? I don?t know that I would change much.? Obviously I think everybody would want to win a match or two more.? Had I won a match or two more, we?d be looking back at something a little bit different. ?But that?s also shaped kind of who I am and how I?ve been able to learn.? You know, if everything would have been easy the whole way, who knows how you?d view things.? I?m pretty content with the way I do.

Q.? You?ve learned from playing in this era of Roger, Rafa, Djokovic in terms of your life?

ANDY RODDICK:? I think so.? At the end of the day, I know that people view it as a career, last little while, of some hard knocks.? But I got to play.? I got to play in a crowd, play in Wimbledon finals, be the guy on a Davis Cup team for a while.? Those are opportunities not a lot of people get. ?As much as I was disappointed and frustrated at times, I?m not sure that I ever felt sorry for myself or begrudged anybody any of their success.

Q.? The first part of that question, what are you most proud of?

ANDY RODDICK:? You know, I was pretty good for a long time.? The reason I gave earlier about not feeling like I could be committed to this thing a hundred percent, that?s one of the things I?m proud of.? That for 13 or 14 years, I was invested fully, every day.? I?ve seen a lot of people throughout that time be invested for a year, kind of tap out for a year, come back.? I?ve been pretty good about keeping my nose to the grindstone. ?I feel like I won a lot of matches from hard work and persistence, even maybe when I had better options as far as shot?making.

Q.? What does it mean to you to be the face of American tennis for the last eight years?

ANDY RODDICK:? It?s been a pleasure.? It?s not something that?s easy every day, for sure, especially when you get kind of anointed at a young age, 17, 18.? It?s something you roll with. ?For the moments where it?s been hard, I?ve had 25 positive things that have come from it.? Again, anything that people may view as tough, I?ve been very lucky and very fortunate.? I?ve gotten a lot of opportunities. ?I wouldn?t trade away a day of it.? I?ve loved every minute.

Q.? On behalf of Australian tennis and Australia, any chance of taking you out for a few beers tonight?

ANDY RODDICK:? We?ll talk after this (laughter).

Q.? You said there?s some interesting things you?d like to move on to do.? What are they?? What does your wife think of this decision?

ANDY RODDICK:? I haven?t asked her yet (laughter).? I?m joking. ?A lot of stuff with my foundation will probably be my primary focus from here for a little bit.? Obviously I?ve gone over to the dark side with you guys with the radio show a little bit.? So that?s fun.? It?s something I enjoy doing.? I?ll probably build on that a little bit. ?There are some other things also.? I?m looking forward to it.

Q.? There?s plenty of athletes that make this kind of announcement in a flood of tears.? You seem quite clear about it.

ANDY RODDICK:? I feel clear.? If I?m being honest, I would have bet against myself on getting through this without tears today.? I must have already gotten them all out earlier. ?I feel pretty good today.? This has been a huge part of my life always.? But I don?t know that it?s always been my entire life.? So I do feel very confident in the things and the people that I have to fall back on.

Q.? Your first time here at the US Open, what has this place meant to you since?

ANDY RODDICK:? My first time?? I was here in ?98, I played Fernando Gonz?lez in the juniors first round.

Q.? You came as a fan before that?

ANDY RODDICK:? Oh, gosh, yeah.? I came here in I think it was 1990 with my parents as a birthday present.? I snuck into the players lounge without a credential.

Q.? Did you see Pete?

ANDY RODDICK:? I saw Pete.? He was playing video games.? I?m pretty sure I beat him at like Mortal Kombat or something.? That was fun. ?I was here in ?91 when Jimmy was making his run.? We only had grounds passes, but I got into the stadium every day somehow. ?Then playing here, I think I played professional in ?99 doubles for the first time.? There have been a lot of memories here.

Q.? What does this place mean to you?

ANDY RODDICK:? It?s meant a lot.? It?s the highest of highs and probably the lowest of lows also.? It?s certainly never been boring.? I?ve always enjoyed the energy.? I feel like each Grand Slam is almost a microcosm of the place it?s played in. ?This is a show.? It?s New York City in every way.? I?m glad that I?ve been a very, very small part of it.

Q.? You mentioned the run of Jimmy Connors.? Are you ready to let it hang all out, go on a dream run here?

ANDY RODDICK:? We?ll see.? I wish it was a choice (smiling).

Q.? You mentioned you talked to Doug and Larry.? What were the reaction of some of your friends?

ANDY RODDICK:? Some are still learning.? I didn?t want to tell the guys that had to play, so James is going to be surprised.? Dougie was a little baby about it all (laughter).? Lost a lot of man respect for him. ?Everyone is a little stunned just because of the finality of it all, but I don?t think anybody was really surprised.? I think the people that know me know that I?ve been thinking about it for a little bit. ?It?s the time.? I think they all understood that.? They?re all happy.? Some of my friends are excited because it means more golf rounds.? I see some head nodding there. ?No, everyone?s been very supportive.

Q.? 2006, Agassi retires.? I remember you saying, The training wheels are off for us.? Now the training wheels are off for the younger guys.? Are you comfortable where the younger guys are moving ahead?

ANDY RODDICK:? I think so.? You know, I can?t protect them now, you know, that?s for sure.? But I think John?s ready.? Mardy is really good with the younger guys.? Ryan will play well once he figures everything out.? Doesn?t change the fact that I still live four miles away from him.? I?ll still kick his ass. ?No, I feel pretty good about it all.? Even though I won?t be competing against them, I think they all know I?ve never been more than a phone call away from them.

Q.? When you?re back at home in Austin, walking about the house, see the US Open trophy you won, what goes through your mind?

ANDY RODDICK:? Honestly, I don?t see it very often.? It?s in a study.? We all know I don?t go there very much (laughter).? I see it probably as much as you guys see the one here.

Q.? To play another match at night, how much have you enjoyed night matches here at the Open and how much different are they from day matches?

ANDY RODDICK:? I mean, it?s the most electric atmosphere in our sport.? There?s something about it.? There?s a lot of eyeballs on TV sets from people who don?t even normally watch tennis during night matches of the US Open.? I think I?ve played as many as anyone. ?Again, it?s just something I?ll look back on with really fond memories.? Hopefully won?t be my last one.

Q.? Do you think it?s going to be an adjustment to be at home?? You guys are world wanderers.? You haven?t really ever stayed at home for years on end.

ANDY RODDICK:? You know, I don?t think I?m foolish enough to think that it?s all going to be easy for me.? I don?t know that I would be that presumptuous. ?I love my home life, my friends, my wife.? My dog is going to be excited.? I?m not going to be a dead?beat dad anymore (smiling).? It will be an adjustment, but hopefully if I ever want to come say hi to you all, they?ll give me a credential.

Samsung Galaxy Stellar hits Verizon September 6th according to leaks

We are slowly but surely learning all the details about Samsung?s still unannounced Galaxy Stellar 4G LTE smartphone. The device is headed to Verizon and has leaked more than a few times including the full photo below thanks to Best Buy Mobile. Today a new leak claims it will be available come September 6th from Big Red.

The folks from Engadget managed to get their hands on a leaked document or two that sheds light on Samsung and Verizon?s plans for the smartphone. While both companies are being tight lipped, we now know plenty about the device. It sure isn?t anything top of the line and will make a great mid-range back to school phone ? and just in time too.

Previous reports have confirmed the device will launch for just $99 as a budget minded device for first time smartphone buyers, but some details still have us a bit puzzled. For one the earlier leaks hint strongly about getting apps from the Amazon App Store, not Google?s, so that?s a thing we are still interested in hearing more about.

As far as specs this device comes with a 4.0-inch WVGA 480 x 800 resolution display, a 1.2 GHz dual-core Qualcomm processor, 3.2 megapixel rear camera, 1.3 front and 4GB of internal storage and Android 4.0 ICS. The device is certainly aimed and priced at first time smartphone buyers and even comes with something Sammy is calling ?starter mode? that should help with noobies to the smartphone world.

For just $99 is this smartphone worth the price? We?ll have to wait for all the official details from Verizon and Samsung to truly know.

Doors in the House How they matter

The positioning, design and make may determine a lot of things about a house. How lit or airy it is, how safe and hygienic it might be etc. But despite the importance that they possess, more often than not, they are overlooked and standardized. People usually do not pay much attention to them. This is strange considering the fact that the first thing that one notices when visiting a home is the door!

But there has been a major turnaround regarding this tendency in recent times. Doors have been recognized as an important part of interior decoration. Various types are being made with varying designs and features to fulfill the various requirements of different customers. Attention is being paid to even the minutest detail such as the doorknob. So now we even have such highly sophisticated doors with self-sanitizing UV doorknobs that kill germs and avoid hands getting contaminated. We also have such stylish and fashionable doors with inbuilt door handles. Even the easy going simple hands free bathroom doors are now available in the market. It is quite clear that a lot of innovation is going into the making to satisfy the varying requirements of customers all over.

Different types of doors (Or as the German term is T?ren )

Indeed when one goes on to explore the different types that are available in the market, one might be dazzled by the amount of choices that might be at hand. There are even doors that can be folded to form emergency earthquake shelters. Different types include standard hinge ones, bypass ones, pocket ones or folding ones. Standard hinge ones shut out all sound and they close off quite securely. Bypass ones can add an element of oomph to the appearance. Foldable ones are handy for closets while pocket ones are a good option for places with little space as they effectively fit in the wall. There are custom sliding ones that can be used in places with odd shapes.

It is thus advisable for customers to understand their requirement thoroughly before they move into the market. Given the range of products that are available in the market right now, it is almost certain that one would find the correct product to suit one's requirements.

Besides design, the other important thing about doors is the material of which they are made. The make should be decided after considering different factors such as the climatic conditions of the particular place. For example if the climate is cold then the providence should be made for the proper insulation, the frames should be tight enough and the material should be used accordingly.

Nowadays there are so many choices available that coming to a proper decision is a process that involves a lot of thought. Too many available choices have made it necessary to research and bag the best possible bargain.

Motorola, Intel taking us to the edge in London on Sept. 18

Motorola-Intel

Intel and Motorola joined forces earlier this year - now it's time to see the fruits of their labor.

That's a big announcement, eh? Motorola and Intel, the marriage first announced way back in January at CES, finally appears to be coming to fruition. (Right on schedule, actually.) So what will we see when the two companies "take us to the edge" on Sept. 18 in London? Most likely, it'll be a production-caliber Android smartphone based off Intel's Medfield platform that it's been teasing us with lo these many months, with its speed, power and promised battery savings that come from the Atom SOC.

Smartphone? Tablet? As always, we'll be there to bring you the whole thing as it happens. Set your calendars, folks!

Hands-on with HBO Go on the Nexus 7

HBO Go on the Nexus 7

Oh, happy day! After a bit of a false start this afternoon with the first update on Google Play, HBO Go is finally available on Jelly Bean devices -- and more specifically, on the Nexus 7. That's the 7-inch tablet with thie high-resolution display Google released this summer, and we've been dying to give HBO's on-demand streaming a go.

The app is pretty stunning, visually. You're asked to log in through your cable provider at the outset (though you can browser shows as a guest, too). From there, you're greeted with a moving wall of thumbnails. Movies, series, specials -- everything HBO has to offer through the app is right there. You can browser traditional menus if you want, but that's not nearly as much fun.

Pick a show, and watch. It's that simple. And it's about time.

We've got some quick hands-on video after the break if you prefer.

100-year-old motorist backs into children outside Los Angeles school

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A 100-year-old motorist lost control of his automobile as he backed out of his driveway into a crowd of children and parents outside an elementary school in Los Angeles on Wednesday, injuring nine children and two adults, authorities said.

Four of the children initially were listed in critical condition, though most were upgraded after they arrived at the hospital, and none appeared to have suffered life-threatening injuries, authorities said.

The pedestrians were standing around a sidewalk vendor's cart when the car rolled up over the curb in front of Main Street Elementary School in south Los Angeles as classes were letting out at about 2:30 p.m. local time, police said.

The driver, who was detained for questioning and later released without being charged, told police his car experienced some kind of mechanical failure, Los Angeles Police Department spokeswoman Karen Rayner said.

"At this point, it doesn't appear as though there are going to be any charges filed, but it's an ongoing investigation," she said. "We'll definitely be looking at his competency to retain his driver's license."

His car also was impounded as evidence, she said.

Authorities did not release the motorist's name. But the driver gave his name to local television station ABC7 as Preston Carter and said he turns 101 next month. He also told the TV station that his brakes failed as he was backing up.

At least one of the nine children injured in the accident remained in critical but stable condition Wednesday night at County-University of Southern California Medical Center in Los Angeles, a hospital spokeswoman said.

homedirectusa.com - Replacing Outdated Appliances During ...

If you're renovating your home or trying to remodel a room, you're in for a boatload of excitement -- but also quite a bit of stress! This fact is not lost on anyone who's embarking on a kitchen remodeling project: the kitchen is one of the most complex renovations you can do, because there is so much to consider.

Buying a new house is exciting, but it's never exactly how you want it. Most home-buyers realize that it's the spaciousness of the home you need to consider, and not the accents. After all, the accents can easily be changed. But once you've purchased the house, that old outdated kitchen won't remodel itself!

A full kitchen remodel requires removal of all the outdated appliances, along with purchasing, set-up, and installation of the new ones. These tasks need to be considered when you're choosing a retailer from which to purchase your new appliances.

If you purchase your new kitchen tools from a bargain-basement company, you're giving yourself the short end of the stick. Purchasing online can eliminate some of the stresses of store-hopping, but it can also open up a world of problems. When you choose an online retailer that uses standard shipping, you're only covering one of your bases: acquisition of the appliance. But once the big, bulky fridge or oven is on your doorstep, what do you do with it? And what happens if it arrives damaged -- or worse, if you damage it when you're trying to bring it in your home?

Enter: white glove shipping through companies like homedirectusa.com. When you purchase your appliance from an online retailer that uses white glove shipping services, you're covering all your bases at once. White glove delivery specialists have the experience to handle your appliance properly and carefully, preventing any damage in transit. Instead of leaving it on your doorstep and brushing off responsibility like a standard shipping company does, white glove shipping specialists from companies like homedirectusa.com will bring your new appliance directly into your home and unpack it. They'll set it up, allow you to inspect it, and remove the packaging debris.

Once the delivery specialists have helped relieve the stress of purchasing a new appliance, they'll go one step further. They'll remove your old appliance and dispose of it accordingly, allowing you to move on with your renovation in no time. Get your overalls and paint brushes ready! With the help of homedirectusa.com, you're well on your way to your dream kitchen.

I have a wide array of interests and hobbies - one of them is writing! I spend a lot of time researching all sorts of interesting fields, and I play author by writing informative articles to share the things I learn.

Garmin Forerunner 10 is a GPS watch designed for outdoor fitness, we go hands-on

Garmin Forerunner 10 is a GPS watch designed for outdoor fitness, we go handson

Having a svelte design is paramount to the success of any fitness accessory -- a desire to avoid hassle often prompts those of us who opt for purging calories without the convenience of a climate-controlled gym to leave smartphones, and even watches at home. That means nifty contraptions like Garmin's new Fenix all-in-one wearable don't make it to the jogging path, making a compact dedicated running watch a more desirable pick instead. That's the idea behind the Forerunner 10, which Garmin is pushing as a dead-simple GPS-equipped wristwatch for runners, joggers and walkers. Water resistant to 50 meters (for ocean-floor sprints?), the gadget tracks essentials like pace and calories burned, while also keeping tabs on your coordinates, letting you download stats like distance and speed through a USB adapter and Garmin Connect.

We weren't able to go for a jog, sadly, though we did spend some time with the Forerunner 10 in an office setting. The watch seemed very straightforward, which you'll find to be quite helpful as you push to match a pre-set pace, without worrying about distractions. It comes in black, green or pink, and while the company suggests that you can wear the watch for non-exercise purposes as well, both colored designs seemed a bit too bright and flashy for regular use. The Forerunner 10 is rated for up to five hours of battery life in training mode, or five weeks in power-save mode (for regular time-keeping purposes), and is available to purchase for $130. You can check one out for yourself at Garmin's Chicago retail location, or you can take a peek in our hands-on photos just below.

internet-radio-pro-l33tech - Android Tapp

Internet Radio Pro ? L33Tech. Streaming Radio app to access thousands of Internet stations via SHOUTCast & Icecast

Internet Radio Pro ? L33Tech is a stable, robust and functional Internet radio application for Android. It allows you to scan and search thousands of radio stations using Icecast and SHOUTCast, so there?s always something to find based on artist, genre or songs. It also features of number of user-friendly options for refining your listening experience. If you like listening to the radio on your device, this might be one you want to check out.

Price: Free or $0.99 for the ad-free version

Tested on: HTC One X
Content Rating: Everyone

AndroidTapp.com Android App Review:

Pros & Cons:

Pros

  • Huge range of stations to discover based on your preferences!
  • Easy to add favourites and customise your experience!
  • Utilises both SHOUTCast and Icecast services!
  • User-friendly and convenient functionality!

Cons

  • Relatively drab UI.
  • Unable to find popular stations directly.
  • Adding your own stations is tricky.

Features:

Internet Radio ? L33Tech?is a relatively no-frills radio streaming app. Its power lies in the utilisation in both the SHOUTcast and ICEcast services for streaming thousands of radio stations and a number of handy and intuitive functions like adjusting the bit-rate for smooth listening and use of customised volumes depending on things like headphone input or Bluetooth.

To get a negative out of the way, the first thing you really notice about the app is the user interface. While it?s functional and responsive, it?s terrifically dull compared to just about every other radio app available in the Google Play Store. While radio apps are clearly about audio rather than looks, I think we?ve come to expect a bit more visually from apps. Certainly if you check out apps like Slacker Radio or TuneIn Radio, they look infinitely better than Internet Radio Pro ? L33tech.

You search for radio stations using either SHOUTcast or Icecast, reputable online streaming services that cater to thousands and thousands of Internet stations from around the world. Simply add a genre, an artist or even just a song and the service will generate a number of stations to check out. As with any huge database of results, stations you find can be a little bit hit and miss, but there are obviously plenty of gems to unearth too. If you do find a keeper, you can simply add it to your favourites, making it simple to look up in the future.

Perhaps the most useful aspects about the app is the user-friendly controls. While you can automate the service to begin playing your last played station when you open Bluetooth or ?put your headphones in (oddly this is default- as if the app is the only reason you would ever use headphones, making it massively annoying if you put your headphones in to listen to music or a podcast only to have to enter the app and switch it off).?The ability to adjust the bit-rate and customise volumes is perhaps most useful. It means your listening experience can be as smooth as possible, essential if you?re listening over a 2G network for example.

While these features are user friendly, they?re not specifically new or unique to the app. Other apps manage to include this functionality and look nice too. While there is great endeavour in creating Internet Radio Pro ? L33Tech, there are simply far better radio apps available in the Google Play Store.

Watch on Mobile

Usefulness:

For listening to radio from a massive selection of stations, while out and about, it?s a capable and nice app to use. It perhaps lacks in usefulness considering it doesn?t come with a widget and finding popular and well-known stations is impossible unless they?re on either Icecast or SHOUTcast.

Ease of Use:

The app is mostly easy to use. But say you want to add your own station- perhaps a popular national station like they have here in the UK. If I want to add a BBC station, I have to enter the whole URL into the app. There?s no logging into the service or access to a web dashboard which would make this easier either, which is hugely unintuitive.

Frequently Used:

This ultimately depends on the user and how often they like to tune in to the radio stations included in the app.

Interface:

To be fair to other radio apps, the user interface in?Internet Radio Pro ? L33Tech is a bit of a let down. Massively simple and perhaps lacking the smoothness and colours of more established and popular radio apps, it?s very underwhelming. It works fine, but looks very basic indeed.

More next gen iPhone part leaks show revised Home button and possible NFC chip

Even more next generation iPhone part leaks are copping up that appear to show a revised Home button enclosure that could possibly solve some of the hardware issues iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S owners already encounter. Even more intriguing is the appearance of a new component that could turn out to be an NFC chip.

iPhone 5 LCD shield and NFC chip

While the front of the digitizer and LCD assembly is almost identical to the current iPhone 4/4S except for the taller display, the back may show some new clues as to what we can expect this Fall. First we can see that the LCD is enclosed in a shield which is different than the current unshielded iPhone 4/4S LCD assembly. It seems to go back to the same LCD shield design Apple used in both the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS. Running above the LCD assembly next to the digitizer and LCD cables is a new component. The folks over at Macotakara believe this could be an NFC chipset. While this could be the case it's hard to know for sure considering it appears to be covered with a shield much like the new LCD.

This would make sense considering many Android phones and tables are already using NFC technology. It could also be another form of integration for the new Passbook feature that is set to debut in iOS 6. Instead of just scanning QR codes, NFC could make it easier to check in at airports or other locations.

iPhone 5 possible home button bracket

The second noticeable change is the addition of a metal bracket around the Home button. This is very simliar to the way Apple has already design the Home button in the iPad 2 and new iPad. The GSM and CDMA variants of the iPhone 4 have both been prone to Home button issues due to the flimsy flex cable that sits behind the Home button. Apple seemed to try to alleviate this issue in the iPhone 4S by adding a rubber flange around the actual Home button and re-designing the Home button contact on the mid-frame. While there aren't as many issues with the iPhone 4S, they are still present. No generation of iPad has experienced these issues thus far so going with that design may be in Apple's best interest at this point.

As we near closer to an announcement it appears that the next generation iPhone will have not only new components such as the micro dock connector but re-designed ones that should make it a more solid build hardware wise than what we've seen in previous iterations of the iPhone. If our sources are correct, we don't have much longer to wait before we find out.

Ben the bear won't return to roadside zoo in NC | MyFOX8.com ...

Posted on: 1:33 pm, August 27, 2012, by Charlie Glancy, updated on: 01:51pm, August 27, 2012

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. ? Everyone agrees that Ben the bear will stay at his new home in California rather than return to Cumberland County.

The Fayetteville Observerreported both sides of the legal fight about Ben?s ownership agreed Monday to keep him at the sanctuary where he was moved earlier this month.

Ben is a black-and-brown bear hybrid who had lived the last six years at Jambbas Ranch Tours, a roadside zoo in Cedar Creek. A lawsuit was filed, and Ben was moved to a Performing Animals Welfare Society sanctuary in San Andreas, Calif.

Ben had lived in a 12-by-22-foot cage with a concrete floor. He now lives in a 2-acre habitat with grass and a pool.

Mexican sect faces down police in school fight

(AP) ? Mexican authorities were unable Monday to overcome the resistance of an apocalyptic religious sect in western Mexico that has refused to allow public school teachers to hold classes in their town of Nueva Jerusalen, or New Jerusalem.

Lines of sect followers in brightly-colored robes lined up at the gated entrance to the town to face down dozens of federal and state police sent in Monday after an apparent compromise plan to set up schools outside the town broke down.

School was supposed to start earlier this month, but adherents of the quasi-Catholic sect burned and razed public schools in July because the school uniforms didn't conform to the sect's ban on modern dress and customs.

Women in New Jerusalem must wear colored robes depending on their status, and modern music, dance, sports and entertainment are all prohibited.

Authorities in the western state of Michoacan had pledged to have the schools back in service by Monday, but no classes were held because conservative members of the sect won't allow classes inside the temple-and-housing complex, and reformists ? who want their kids to go to school ? won't accept a proposed compromise to hold classes in neighboring towns.

Federal police commander Miguel Guerrero said talks continued Monday with both sect traditionalists and reformists.

"We are simply discussing the community's situation," Guerrero said after the talks.

Under Mexican law, grade school education is compulsory. The community practices a form of Latin Mass that is not recognized by the Roman Catholic Church. The sect believes the town will be the only place saved in an impending apocalypse, which it predicts but no longer sets a date for.

S. Korea on alert as major typhoon Bolaven nears

South Korea was Monday bracing for the arrival of major typhoon Bolaven with a main port and ferry routes closed, classes cancelled and officials put on high alert.

Typhoon Bolaven -- one of the most powerful storms in the region in decades -- was churning Monday towards the peninsula after lashing Japan's Okinawa island with heavy rain and wind and injuring at least five people.

The typhoon, with winds of up to 173 kilometres (107 miles) per hour, was expected to hit the South from late Monday to early Wednesday before reaching North Korea, Seoul's weather service said.

In the southern port city of Busan authorities Monday banned all ships from entering the docks until the storm passes. Large ships were advised to move elsewhere out of the storm's path.

The transportation ministry said 68 of the country's 87 sea ferry routes had been cancelled. Airport authorities were checking runways and other facilities.

A state disaster relief board raised its alert to the highest level, meaning more officials will be on watch.

Some 140 flights on Monday and Tuesday, mostly to or from the southern resort island of Jeju, were cancelled.

President Lee Myung-Bak called for "thorough preparation" to minimise damage and prevent casualties.

In Seoul and the western port city of Incheon, all schools were ordered closed Tuesday.

The typhoon will dump as much as 500 millimetres (20 inches) of rain in some parts of the nation from Monday to Wednesday and bring strong winds and high tides, the weather service said.

Storm alerts will be issued in most parts of the country by Monday night.

Eye Health in Sports and Recreation | GT Sunglasses

Eye Health in Sports and Recreation

(From Eye Smart Site)

Tens of thousands of sports and recreation-related eye injuries occur each year. The good news is that 90 percent of serious eye injuries are preventable through use of appropriate protective eyewear.

The risk of eye injury can vary depending on the activity. Make sure the level of eye protection you or others in your family use is appropriate for the type of activity. Regular eyeglasses do not offer proper eye protection.

High-Risk Sports

For all age groups, sports-related eye injuries occur most frequently in baseball, basketball and racquet sports.

Boxing and full-contact martial arts pose an extremely high risk of serious and even blinding eye injuries. There is no satisfactory eye protection for boxing, although thumb-less gloves may reduce the number of boxing eye injuries.

In baseball, ice hockey and men?s lacrosse, a helmet with a polycarbonate (an especially strong, shatterproof, lightweight plastic) face mask or wire shield should be worn at all times. It is important that hockey face masks be approved by the Hockey Equipment Certification Council or the Canadian Standards Association (CSA).

Baseball Protection

Protective eyewear with polycarbonate lenses?should be worn for sports such as

basketball, racquet sports, soccer and field hockey. Choose eye protectors that have

been tested to meet the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards or SAI GLOBAL

which incorporates Standards Australia & Standards New Zealand. See the GTSL Sunglasses Protective Eyewear Site for additional details. If you already have reduced vision in one eye, consider the risks of injuring the stronger eye before participating in contact or racquet sports, which pose a higher risk of eye injury. Check with your ophthalmologist (Eye M.D.) to see if appropriate eye protection is available and whether or not participating in contact or racquet sports is advised.

Other Risky Leisure Activities

While sports account for a particularly high number of eye injuries, they are by no means the only hobby that poses a risk to your sight. According to physicians surveyed for the 2008 Eye Injury Snapshot conducted by the AmericanAcademyof Ophthalmology and the American Society of Ocular Trauma, more than 40 percent of patients treated for eye injuries sustained at home were involved in home repairs, yard work, cleaning and cooking. Use common sense and err on the side of caution, whatever the activity.

  • Consider the risk of flying debris or other objects during activities and wear appropriate eye protection.
  • Remember that eyeglasses aren?t sufficient protection.
  • Be careful during activities or games involving projectiles and other sharp objects that could create injury if in contact with the eye. For example, the U.S. Eye Injury Registry indicates that fishing is the number one cause of sports-related eye injuries.
  • If you wear contacts or eyeglasses, pack a back-up form of vision correction during bike trips or other activities where you could lose or shatter a lens.

If an eye injury occurs, see an ophthalmologist or go to the emergency room immediately, even if the eye injury appears minor. Delaying medical attention can result in permanent vision loss or blindness.

Learn how to recognize an eye injury.

On-the-Field Visual Test Helps Diagnose Concussions in Athletes

About 3.8 million Americans sustain sports-related concussions each year, so a quick, reliable screening test would be useful on the sidelines, to keep injured athletes from returning to play too soon, and off the field to help physicians more effectively diagnose, treat and rehabilitate patients with concussions. An on-the-field visual test can help.

Date Your Wife: Men Have Responsibility and Power - Crosswalk.com

Editor?s note: This excerpt is taken from Date Your Wife by Justin Buzzard copyright ?2012. ?Used by permission of Crossway, a publishing ministry of Good News Publishers, Wheaton, Il 60187, www.crossway.org.

Chapter 6: Where Marriages Go Right, Part 1: The Husband

Every time a boy is born, we should think of?Genesis 2:15. The moment we see the ultrasound picture, the moment we hear the cry of a boy exiting the womb and entering the world, we should recite in our minds:

The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it. (Gen. 2:15)

Boys are born with a mission: to work and keep, to cultivate and guard. God put Adam on the earth, and God pushes boys out of wombs to be cultivators and guardians.

I?m the father of three boys?Cru, Hudson, and Gus. Cru entered the world at 8:00 a.m. on a Thursday morning, a scheduled C-section because he was upside down in his mother?s womb. Less than two years later, Hudson arrived on a Sunday afternoon during the fourth quarter of a San Francisco 49ers football game. The Niners won. The night of Hudson?s second birthday, Taylor woke me up at 1:00 a.m. and we raced to the hospital, just in time for the arrival of Gus. All three Buzzard boys were born at the same hospital, delivered by the same doctor. When the doctor presented me with each of my sons, I thought of Genesis 2:15. I thought about the mission God?s entrusted to these three men in training. I thought about the twin pillars of their mission: responsibility and power.?

Responsibility

God gives men enormous responsibility. And the weightiest responsibility he gives to a man is a woman?a wife. In this union, a man?s ability to cultivate and guard is put to the greatest test. Will the man lay down his life in order that his wife may flourish? That is the question that measures a marriage. In order for the garden of marriage to be properly cultivated and guarded, a man must give more than he?s ever given.?

Many men avoid this responsibility. Some men abandon this responsibility. A few men appreciate this responsibility. No man can handle this responsibility.

This is the place to revisit what I said in chapter 3:?

It?s your fault. This is the second most important truth to learn from this book: it?s your fault. You are the husband. You are the man. And God has given man the ability to be the best thing or the worst thing that ever happened to a marriage. Before you can be the best thing that ever happened to your marriage, you must see that you have always been the worst thing that happened to your marriage. If you want to change a marriage, change the man. Why? Because the man is what is wrong, and the man is what, made right, alters the course of everything.

Everybody knows there?s something wrong with men. The man problem has been in the news for decades. For decades society has told us that the problem with men is a responsibility problem?that if men acted like men, acted responsibly, things would be better.?

I disagree.

Yes, responsibility is part of the problem. The world is full of irresponsible men. Genesis 2:15 gives men a responsibility that is shirked more often than it is embraced.?Ephesians 5?further defines this responsibility for husbands: ?Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her? (Eph. 5:25), a verse many husbands aren?t quick to quote or execute. Responsibility is a problem, but it isn?t the heart of the problem.

(AP) ? Eager to bolster an inexperienced pitching staff during their first playoff run since 1997, the Baltimore Orioles obtained left-hander Joe Saunders on Sunday in a trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Baltimore gave Arizona right-handed reliever Matt Lindstrom and cash considerations or a player to be named later.

Saunders, who was scheduled to start Sunday against San Diego, was 6-10 with a 4.22 ERA in 21 starts with Arizona this season. He won 12 games last season while helping the Diamondbacks win their first NL West title since 2007.

Baltimore began the day tied for the second American League wild-card spot with Oakland and in third place in the AL East, only four games behind the division-leading New York Yankees.

"I like our ballclub's chances," said Dan Duquette, the Orioles vice president of baseball operations. "There's an old saying: If you're going in the right direction, keep walking. So the addition of Joe Saunders gives us a chance to keep walking in the right direction. And I think it gives us better balance against the left-handed lineups that we're going to be facing."

Saunders was born in nearby northern Virginia, played high school ball in Virginia and pitched at Virginia Tech before being drafted in the first round of the 2002 draft by the Los Angeles Angels.

"We've liked Joe Saunders for quite a while," Duquette said. "We had some discussions with him in the offseason. He's a local kid and a professional left-handed pitcher. He's won more than he's lost in the big leagues, he's pitched in the American League, he's pitched in the playoffs. He's pitched in a tough ballpark in Arizona."

The Orioles have only one left-hander in the bullpen and a rotation that includes rookies Miguel Gonzalez, Wei-Yin Chen and Steve Johnson.

"We just liked his experience, which I think compliments our starting rotation," Duquette said of Saunders. "And I also like the fact he's left-handed."

Saunders, 31, has pitched for the Angels and Diamondbacks since launching his big league career in 2005.

"I just like this addition of veteran left-handed depth to our staff," Duquette said. "It helps solidify the starting rotation while we're waiting for (injured) Jason Hammel to return. Then, if Jason Hammel does return, it gives us another good left-handed option because Joe Saunders is very good left-on-left. While we're waiting for (left-handed reliever Troy) Patton to come back, if we have several starters doing well, Joe gives us more depth and experience to our pitching staff."

Lindstrom went 1-0 with a 2.72 ERA in 34 appearances with the Orioles this season. He has held right-handers to a .207 average and scoreless in 10 of his past 11 outings.

Lindstrom has played six major league seasons with Miami, Houston, Colorado and Baltimore.

"He's another right-handed power arm. He's got some experience here in the West as well. We're pretty familiar with him, and you can see we like power arms in our bullpen, so he'll be a good addition," Arizona manager Kirk Gibson said.

Duquette believed Saunders would be more valuable to the Orioles than Lindstrom at this point in the season.

"Matt Lindstrom did a nice job for us. He contributed to the bullpen," Duquette said. "I just think the left-handed addition to our starting rotation and the capability to get more innings at a high level was better for the team at this stage of the season. And who knows? Joe Saunders is a local kid. Maybe he's with us beyond this year. That's something we can take a look at. It certainly strengthens us now."

To fill Lindstrom's place on the 25-man roster, the Orioles recalled right-hander Jake Arrieta from Triple-A Norfolk. Arrieta, Baltimore's opening day starter, went 3-9 with a 6.13 ERA in 18 starts with the Orioles before being optioned to Norfolk on July 5.

The Diamondbacks had talked about going to a six-man rotation so they could keep rookie Tyler Skaggs in the big leagues, but went in a different direction. With Saunders gone, Skaggs has his spot.

Arizona general manager Kevin Towers said the trade had a lot to do with the team's young pitching. Skaggs, Patrick Corbin and Wade Miley are all rookies, while Trevor Cahill and Ian Kennedy are the only ones left from the opening day rotation.
