Late-night poll: Your opinion of Ice Cream Sandwich

ICS

Since a few phones and tablets have been upgraded to (or shipped with) Ice Cream Sandwich, now is a good time to ask those who are using it what they think. We know, most devices don't have it yet (don't worry, you'll get to express your displeasure as well) but it's pinging the website enough to get a fair idea from enough folks to see how El Goog did with the latest version.

I bounce back and forth between devices with ICS and one or two without it. I'm probably in a unique position where I can really tell what's better (to me, anyway) and what's not after close inspection, but first impressions matter as well. Even if your first trip into Androidland has you running ICS, don't be afraid to vote! My vote? I really like it. Other than no persistent menu button (which I'm going to have to deal with on my own terms -- it ain't coming back) I think everything else is either a great improvement, or the beginnings of one. Some of it took some time to get used to, mainly the people app and the phone app, but it's starting to feel like old hat and I'm digging it.

But I know what I think. It's time to find out what you think -- tell us in tonight's poll!

Can a not for profit make a profit? ? Womack Consulting Group

Reprinted from?Inc.com

Nonprofit corporations, by definition, exist not to make money but to fulfill one of the purposes recognized by federal law: charitable, educational, religious, scientific or literary activities. Under federal tax law and state corporate statutes, however, as long as a nonprofit corporation is organized and operated for a recognized nonprofit purpose, it can take in more money than it expends in conducting its activities. In other words, it can make a profit.

Making a Profit From Related Activities
Let?s take as an example a group called Friends of the Library Inc. It?s a 501(c)(3) nonprofit (that means it has a federal tax exemption) organized to encourage literary appreciation in the community and to raise money for the support and improvement of the public library. It can make a profit from its lecture series featuring famous authors and from its annual sale of donated books.

Because these activities are educational, they do not jeopardize the group?s tax-exempt status. It may use its tax-free profits for its own operating expenses (including salaries for officers and staff) or for the benefit of the library. What it cannot do is distribute any of the profits for the benefit of officers, directors or employees connected with Friends of the Library ? as dividends, for example.

Unrelated Business Activities
Nonprofits can also make money in ways that aren?t related to their nonprofit purposes. Such unrelated business income is permissible and often essential to the survival of nonprofit organizations. But it is subject to taxation, under state and federal corporate tax rules.

It?s best not to let unrelated business activities reach the point where the group starts to look like a regular commercial business. Unrelated business activities shouldn?t absorb a substantial amount of staff time, require additional paid staff or volunteers to run them, or produce much more income than your exempt-purpose activities and services generate.

For example, say that many thousands of books are donated to Friends of the Library for its annual book sale, one of its major fund raising events. Although the sale is always highly successful, thousands of books are left over, and Friends decides to sell the more valuable ones by advertising in the rare and out-of-print books classified sections in various magazines.

The response is overwhelming, and soon there are six employees cataloging books. In addition, Friends begins a business buying books from other dealers and reselling them to the public. Such a situation could attract attention from the IRS and prompt it to reconsider Friends? 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status.

Finally, although it?s not typical for the average group, a nonprofit corporation may make money from ? passive? sources such as rents, royalties, interest and investments. This income is non-taxable in some cases.

OCZ says its Indilinx controller is actually built by Marvell, but has custom firmware

OCZ still using Marvell controllers
OCZ received stacks of praise following its brave switch to in-house Indilinx-branded controllers, which have delivered solid performance in both the Octane and Vertex 4 SSDs. However, the company has now confirmed to AnandTech that its Indilinx Everest 1 and 2 controllers are actually still based on Marvell products, with a little overclocking on the side, and it hasn't yet implemented its own hardware. That would explain why the latest SSDs are so closely on a par with other Marvell-powered drives, like the Crucial's m4 and Intel's 520. But if it sounds like the brightest kid in the class just admitted to copying some other student's homework, then we should probably all chill out: after all, OCZ never made any precise claims about Everest's provenance in the first place. Besides, one of the most important aspects of a solid state drive is its firmware and OCZ insists that's totally home-cooked. The news here is that we still haven't seen what OCZ is fully capable of following its Indilinx acquisition.

OCZ says its Indilinx controller is actually built by Marvell, but has custom firmware originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 12 Apr 2012 10:42:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Olympics are a long-term goal for the newly formed IMMAF, but it?s a steep climb

While in Sweden for UFC on Fuel 2, the UFC announced their backing of the International Mixed Martial Arts Federation, a group that will help MMA grow globally as well as streamline and standardize the sport so it can be included in the Olympics.

"Having an umbrella organization that will oversee and help build the sport on a global level will not only provide advanced and ever-improving safety standards but will also create a unified global model to help introduce the sport to new markets. It is our hope that it will also take us one step closer to witnessing the inclusion of the sport of MMA on the Olympic program," UFC chairman Lorenzo Fertitta said via press release.

But getting a sport included in the Olympics is a difficult, drawn-out, incredibly political process, which was discussed by IMMAF chair August Wallen.

You talk to any athlete and say, 'Would you like to compete in the Olympics?' who would say no? That's something we have to have as a vision down the line, but getting a lot of national federations, starting world championships, applying for SportAccord, that's things we can control. When you're going into the Olympics, you have to compete with other sports that want to go into the Olympics.

To be included in the Olympics, the sport has to think long-term and be ready to make several changes. MMA needs to be accepted by SportAccord, an umbrella group that supports individual sports' governing bodies. Not only does the IMMAF need to prove that MMA is a sport, but they have to show how it corrals MMA's disparate national governing bodies.

Drug-testing requirements

In their application to SportAccord, the IMMAF will have to include a "copy of its constitution/statutes, regulations and directives which must comply with the World Anti Doping Code (incl. detailed statistics on the tests conducted and the number of anti-doping rules violations having led to sanctions)."

Right now, in the U.S. alone, the different states' commissions anti-doping standards are not anywhere near as stringent as that of the World Anti-Doping Alliance. For example, the Nevada Athletic Commission is just trying out out-of-competition drug testing. They used it when all of the heavyweights for UFC 146 happened to be in town for a pre-fight press conference, and they are one of the few states to even try it. It's a good start, but WADA's idea of out-of-competition testing includes sending drug testers out and having them knock on athletes' doors at ungodly hours for drug tests and expensive tests that are beyond the means of most cash-strapped state commissions.

Membership in SportAccord also requires that the sport is truly global. They define that as "at least 40 active Member Federations from at least three continents." A member federation is a national governing body, like USA Wrestling. While MMA is popular enough to easily meet the three continents requirement, 40 national governing bodies is a tough get as the sport stands now. Several countries the UFC visits have no governing body, so the UFC has to act as their own commission by providing judges, referees and running weigh-ins.

SportAccord has many more qualifications including an already existing world championship structure, proof that judges are well-trained and fair, and a long-term strategy which ensures long-term health for the sport.

After SportAccord, the IOC

Once the IMMAF meets all these requirements and gets accepted into SportAccord, it's a whole other uphill battle to get in the Olympics. They need to convince two thirds of the notoriously stodgy International Olympic Committee that MMA is a sport that is worthy of inclusion.

If MMA plans to lobby for the Summer Olympics, where it would make the most sense, it has to hope that another sport is cut. The Summer Games are capped at 28 sports. Golf and rugby were voted into the docket for this summer's Olympics in London and the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Baseball and softball (which were in the Olympics but cut in 2008), karate, squash and roller sports are also trying to make it in the Olympic door.

This is not to say inclusion of MMA in a future Olympics can't happen. Wallen said he would like to see a country with strong MMA ties get the Olympics so that the sport can be included as a demonstration. Istanbul, Turkey; Tokyo, Japan; Baku, Azerbaijan; Doha, Qatar; and Madrid, Spain are bidding for the 2020 Games.

With the IMMAF's founding, the sport is much closer to the goal than it was a year ago as the IMMAF can help MMA's disparate governing bodies move towards standards that will cover the sport from top to bottom.

However, MMA fans should realize that seeing Jon Jones or Jose Aldo win Olympic gold is unlikely. Hope, instead, to see Jones' daughter on the Olympic podium.

Egypt candidate Suleiman warns of religious state

CAIRO (AP) ? Hosni Mubarak's former vice president said he decided to run for president to prevent Islamists from turning Egypt into a "religious state."

Omar Suleiman, who was also Mubarak's long-serving intelligence chief, said in an interview published Thursday that the Muslim Brotherhood's fielding of a presidential candidate"horrified" Egyptians. The Islamic fundamentalist Brotherhood, which has emerged as Egypt's most powerful political bloc after last year's uprising, reversed an earlier decision not to field a candidate.

Suleiman told the weekly El-Fagr that the Brotherhood would control all state institutions if it wins the presidency and warned Egypt would be isolated internationally if that happened. The Brotherhood already controls just under half of parliament's seats and is the single largest bloc. Together with other Islamists, they have a 70 percent majority in the chamber.

"It is my belief that those who demand that I run, like a majority of this nation's citizens, are in a predicament and indeed the whole state is in a predicament, especially after the Brotherhood decided to field one of its leaders for the presidency after it pledged not to," Suleiman, 75, said in the interview.

"That change struck horror in the souls of members of the Egyptians society. If the Brotherhood's candidate wins the presidential election, Egypt will be turned into a religious state. All state institutions will be controlled by the Brotherhood."

Suleiman's comments came as the Islamist-dominated parliament debated a draft bill to strip top figures from the Mubarak regime of their political rights, including voting and running for office, for 10 years. If adopted, the law would disqualify Suleiman from running in the May 23-24 presidential election along with another candidate, Ahmed Shafiq, who was Mubarak's last prime minister.

During Mubarak's three-decade secular presidency, the Muslim Brotherhood was repressed with thousands of its members jailed.

Government representatives told the legislature on Thursday that the draft law violated the constitution, with the Justice Minister Mohammed Attiyah saying that no one should be stripped of their political rights without a court order.

Lawmakers countered that the nation remains in a "revolutionary state" that empowers the legislature to make such a law.

Others warned that a Suleiman presidency would mean the imprisonment of lawmakers and what one lawmaker described as the return of Israel's influence in Egypt. Suleiman was a frequent visitor to Israel while Egypt maintained the Arab world's first and longest standing peace treaty with the Jewish state.

"We are in a state of self-defense, we are defending Egypt and ourselves," said independent Islamist lawmaker Mahmoud Khodeiri, one of the country's top legal experts. "Omar Suleiman means Mubarak returns to the palace, and we all go to prison, and these are the lucky ones because others will be sent to the gallows."

Mubarak is on trial for his life, charged with complicity in the killing of protesters in the uprising that toppled his regime. He was arrested in April last year, but has since been detained in hospital.

Other presidential candidates are also facing legal challenges, including the Brotherhood's Khairat el-Shater. Some have challenged el-Shater's candidacy on the grounds he served time in prison in connection to his political activity under Mubarak. He was pardoned by the military generals who succeeded Mubarak, but his detractors argue that more time must pass before he can run, according to the law.

The election of a president is the last stage of Egypt's turbulent transition to democratic rule. The ruling generals who took over from Mubarak have promised to step down by July 1.

Longevity in Antiques and Writing | Careann's Musings

According to Wikipedia, an antique is something ?collected or desirable because of its age, beauty, rarity, condition, utility, personal emotional connection, and/or other unique features. It is an object that represents a previous era or time period in human society.?

~

Nobody could ever call me a collector of antiques. I?ve never been one to browse second hand stores or antique galleries. I?m not big on old furniture, although I do have a few pieces, precious only because they?re connected to a bit of our family history.

My grandmother?s ninety-five year old Singer sewing machine went from her home to my parents?, then was transferred to their northern residence where lack of electricity meant its treadle mechanism was useful. It hasn?t been used in years, but now belongs to one of my daughters, the only real seamstress in our family, who appreciates its historic value.

I don?t do a lot of sewing, but I have a small sewing machine that serves my mending needs and helps me make the occasional set of curtains.

There are lots of added sophistications on newer machines, but in nearly one hundred years, the basic principle of a needle and a series of loop stitches being used to close a seam hasn?t changed much.

~

Some things never change. Storytelling has been going on since the beginning of mankind. I did a search on the oldest known novel and found several claims. One suggested THE EPIC OF GILGAMESH as the oldest written story, dating to somewhere between 2750 and 2500 BC. Another said the oldest English novel is PIERS PLOWMAN written in the early 1300s AD.

One thing is clear; people have been captivated by stories of mystery and intrigue, mythology, the supernatural, and family sagas for centuries. Those of us with a yearning to record or invent stories of our own are simply carrying on the tradition.

We may not scratch hieroglyphics into stone, or carefully pen words on papyrus, but we nevertheless place words on some kind of more modern vehicle so they may be conveyed to others. Our efforts link us to history, not in the tools we use but in a creative desire common to generations before us.

I started this by saying I?m not an antique collector, but I must admit to a fascination with old books. I don?t look for first editions or pristine copies, but just like to bring home the occasional ?old? volume discovered at a church garage sale. I mentioned some of them in a blog post here. The oldest fiction (actually, I?ve realized it?s more of a memoir) I?ve encountered is an 1834 edition of R. H. Barham?s THE INGOLDSBY LEGENDS.

I also have a relative?s handwritten diary dating back to 1881. It?s not fiction, but when I read of monthly wages of $24, and that a church social raised $14.69 less a dollar for tea and sugar, to help pay for the circuit preacher, it sounds far fetched to my modern ear! I wonder if anything I?ve written will still be around 132 years from now, and what people then will think of my monthly income.?

Do you like antique hunting? Not counting the Bible, can you name the oldest book you?ve read?

~ ?~ ?~

Obama-Romney showdown starts with a harsh tone

MENDENHALL, Pa. (AP) ? The 2012 presidential general election has begun. It won't be pretty.

Tuesday marked Day One, in essence, of the contest between the two virtually certain nominees, Republican Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama. Rick Santorum's departure removed the last meaningful bump from Romney's path to the GOP nomination. Romney and Obama wasted no time in portraying the voters' choice in dire, sometimes starkly personal terms.

With Obama saddled with a still-ailing economy and a divisive health care law, and Romney riding a wave of blistering TV ads, the fall election is unlikely to dwell on "hope," ''change" and other uplifting themes from four years ago. Much of the nation's ire then was aimed at departing President George W. Bush, and Obama had no extensive record to defend.

The landscape is much different now. Americans face nearly seven months of hard-hitting jabs and counterpunches between the two parties' standard-bearers.

Romney, the former Massachusetts governor making his second presidential bid, attacked Obama with gusto Tuesday in his two public events that followed Santorum's surprising announcement.

Campaigning in Pennsylvania, where an April 24 GOP primary is suddenly less important than its likely role as a battleground state this fall, Romney portrayed Obama as a weak leader who apologizes for America's greatness and prefers European-style socialism over robust free enterprise. Obama's allies call such claims nonsense.

"The right course for America is not to divide America," Romney told a GOP dinner gathering in Mendenhall, near Philadelphia. "That's what he's doing," he said of Obama. "His campaign is all about finding Americans to blame and attack, and find someone to tax more, someone who isn't giving, isn't paying their fair share."

He said Obama prefers "a government-centered society."

Obama, campaigning in Florida, said the choice this fall will be as stark as in the 1964 contest between Lyndon Johnson and Barry Goldwater, which resulted in one of the biggest Democratic landslides ever. That election included dramatic and controversial moments, such as Goldwater's defense of "extremism in the defense of liberty" and a devastating TV ad suggesting a Goldwater presidency would lead to nuclear war.

Obama didn't mention Romney by name. His top aides have shown less restraint, however.

Obama campaign manager Jim Messina said in a statement after Santorum's withdrawal: "It's no surprise that Mitt Romney finally was able to grind down his opponents under an avalanche of negative ads. But neither he nor his special interest allies will be able to buy the presidency with their negative attacks. The more the American people see of Mitt Romney, the less they like him."

Other Obama campaign officials have mocked Romney's wealth and called him out of touch with average Americans.

Romney and his allies, including a potent super PAC, have proved their ability to raise millions of dollars to air brutally effective attack ads, which crippled Santorum and Newt Gingrich in the GOP primary contests. Obama will raise many millions, too, and few doubt that he will hit Romney hard.

On Tuesday, Romney made clear that he will go after Obama's character as well as his record. In speeches in Mendenhall and Wilmington, Del., Romney said Obama isn't merely inept at economic policy, he actively dislikes business.

Obama "is clearly trying to hide from us what he intends to do," Romney said in Wilmington. "He's going to hide. And it's my job to seek."

Romney made similar remarks last month. Now, with Santorum off the stage and Gingrich and Ron Paul hardly a factor, there are no intra-party distractions to dilute such comments. Romney and Obama are fully engaged, one-on-one, at a much earlier stage than in 2008, when Obama had to parry Democratic rival Hillary Rodham Clinton throughout the summer before fully turning to Republican John McCain.

Even then, Bush's unpopularity helped fuel Obama's campaign and deflected some of the anti-GOP sentiment away from the actual nominee.

This time, the incumbent president is on the ballot, with unemployment above 8 percent. The tea party, which didn't exist in 2008, is a potent and unpredictable force.

And Romney suddenly is free of meaningful primary worries. That leaves him able to focus the full force of his fundraising and campaigning skills against Obama.

An Amazing Difference With A Simple Electrical Upgrade ? Home ...

April 10th, 2012 by admin Leave a reply ?

It?s amazing what a difference the right lighting can make in your kitchen. If you want to freshen up the look of your kitchen without doing a complete remodel, simply updating your kitchen lighting may be the answer. It?s a more affordable one, too. A central ceiling fixture and lighting over the sink and stove were the basics of kitchen lighting for many years. Today, the importance of kitchen lighting to sufficiently illuminate work surfaces and enhance the visual appeal of your kitchen is being recognized by experts in the industry.

Toe kick lighting and over-cabinet lighting can provide an inviting glow to your kitchen, as well as serve as a night light for midnight snacks, says an electrician in Katy, TX. They encourage their clients to include as many lighting options in their kitchens as possible. Under-cabinet lighting is important to light up your countertop work spaces. More people are seeing it as important part of their overall kitchen lighting scheme. When you?re working at a kitchen counter, your body and the upper cabinets block the ceiling light. Under-cabinet lighting provides the illumination necessary to see what you are doing.

Including this variation in lighting options within a room is referred to as ?layering? in the lighting industry. These various layers of light allow for more task- orientated adjustments to the lighting in a room. During food preparation, you need plenty of bright light in your work area, but casual entertaining around your eating bar may call for much more subtle lighting in that area. With the proper layers in place, each of these lighting conditions can be achieved by turning on and off certain lighting fixtures in the kitchen area. When you add dimmer controls to these lighting layers, you increase your control of lighting functions even further. It?s always best to have your local Electrician Katy TX to help with quoting and installations.

As you look at current light fixture options, you may note that many of today?s fixtures have cleaner lines and less ornate finishes to them. This fits with the overall trend in home finishes. Older cabinets often had glass inserts that had a golden tint. Today?s cabinet door glass has a white look to it. This remains true even when the glass is combined with bronze trim. The door styles chosen for today?s kitchen will follow this trend by having sleek smooth finishes rather than the raised wood panels of the past. Cabinet hardware, like the light fixtures, will have a more modern look. Simple understated styling in nickel and chrome finishes are much more popular today than the antiqued brass you will find in older homes. Mixing and matching your new kitchen lighting finishes and styles to complement your kitchen?s existing look is a big part of the fun in this essential kitchen upgrade project.

Whether you are doing a full kitchen remodel, or simply changing out the lighting, you?ll find many kitchen lighting options to choose from. Remember the layering factor, especially if the kitchen is intended to be highly functional.

Personality, habits of thought and gender influence how we remember

ScienceDaily (Apr. 10, 2012) ? We all have them -- positive memories of personal events that are a delight to recall, and painful recollections that we would rather forget. A new study reveals that what we do with our emotional memories and how they affect us has a lot to do with our gender, personality and the methods we use (often without awareness) to regulate our feelings.

The study appears in Emotion, a journal of the American Psychological Association.

"We're looking at traits that are associated with the way that people process the emotional world and the way that they respond to it," said University of Illinois psychology professor Florin Dolcos, who conducted the study with postdoctoral researcher Sanda Dolcos and University of Alberta postdoctoral researcher Ekaterina Denkova. "We wanted to look not only at how personality traits might influence what and how people remember, but also to examine how that impacts their (subsequent) emotional state."

Previous studies of personality and its relationship to autobiographical memory have tended to focus only on women and only on negative memories, Florin Dolcos said. They do this because women are more likely than men to be diagnosed with emotional disorders such as depression or anxiety, which are associated with an increased focus on negative emotions.

Previous studies have found that people with high neuroticism -- the tendency to focus on negative emotions, particularly in times of stress -- also "are more disposed to become ill with affective disorders like depression and anxiety-related problems," Dolcos said. But these studies have not looked at differences between men and women, the relationship between positive and negative memories, the frequency with which individuals recall specific memories and the vividness of their memories, he said.

Nor have most such studies examined the strategies people use to regulate their emotions when calling to mind positive and negative autobiographical memories. Such strategies include suppression (trying to blunt or hide negative emotions) and reappraisal (trying to adopt a new perspective on unpleasant memories).

The new study examined all these variables, and the findings offer a first hint of the complex interplay of factors that contribute to mood in healthy young men and women.

The researchers used questionnaires and verbal cues to assess personality and to elicit more than 100 autobiographical memories in each of 71 participants (38 of them women). Their analysis revealed that both men and women who were high in extroversion (gregarious, assertive, stimulus-seeking) tended to remember more positive than negative life events. Men who were high in neuroticism tended to recall a greater proportion of negative memories than men who were low in neuroticism, while women who were high in neuroticism tended to return to the same negative memories again and again, a process called rumination.

Rumination is known to be associated with depression, Florin Dolcos said.

"Depressed people recollect those negative memories and as a result they feel sad," he said. "And as a result of feeling sad, the tendency is to have more negative memories recollected. It's a kind of a vicious circle."

None of the study subjects had been diagnosed with depression or other emotional disorders, but, as might be expected, both male and female participants were likely to experience a lower mood after recalling negative autobiographical memories. (Positive memories generally preceded a more positive mood, but the association was indirect and mediated by extroversion, the researchers reported.)

The most pronounced differences between men and women involved the effects of the emotional strategies they used when recalling negative autobiographical memories. Men who engaged in reappraisal, making an effort to think differently about their memories, were likely to recall more positive memories than their peers, while men who used suppression, trying to tamp down their negative emotional responses, saw no pronounced effect on the recall of positive or negative memories. In women, however, suppression was significantly associated with the recall of negative memories and with a lower mood afterward.

"I think that the most important thing here is that we really need to look concomitantly at sex- and personality-related differences and to acknowledge that these factors have a different impact on the way we record our memories, on what we are doing with our memories, and later, how what we are doing with our memories is impacting our emotional well-being," said Sanda Dolcos.

The findings are instructive for both men and women, she said. Being more outgoing, interrupting rumination and using reappraisal seems to work best for men and women as a strategy for dealing with negative memories and cherishing the positive ones, she said.

Florin and Sanda Dolcos are affiliates of the department of psychology and the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology at Illinois.

The Costs of Being Costco: Why Ethics Matter ? business ...

Almost everyone has heard of the membership warehouse retailer, Costco Wholesale, whether or not you actually choose to shop there. You can find one of their warehouses in over 400 locations around the United States, as well as an additional 200 warehouses in Canada, Mexico, Australia, the United Kingdom, and parts of Asia. Although they are not quite as instantly recognizable as their main competitor, Sam?s Club of Wal-Mart Inc., Costco has attracted somewhat of a cult following due to their unusual business operations. In many financial comparisons, Costco seems to beat out all of their industry competitors. Even in the recent economic downtown, Costco still posted growth in their stock, as well as higher than industry average profits. So what exactly makes Costco so successful? Many business analysts argue that Costco?s focus on corporate social responsibility is what sets them apart from other retailers such as Sam?s Club or BJ?s Warehouse. Their focus on doing ?the right thing? for all of their stakeholders, as well as a vision that aims for long-term success, is a unique business model that has interesting implications for many debates within the business world today. Should a company?s main focus be profit? Do they have a responsibility to act in the best interest of all stakeholders? What are the effects of these decisions? Using Costco as a prime example of a socially responsible corporation, I hope to prove that acting in a socially responsible manner towards all stakeholders is ultimately more beneficial for a company.

??????????? A traditional view of business ethics is that is it acceptable, and even encouraged, to operate only for maximum profit. In his article ?The Social Responsibility of Business is to Increase Profits?, Milton Friedman argues that having any sort of other ?social responsibility? will only hurt a company in the long run. As he claims, your ethical responsibility as a business owner or executive is to ensure the highest profits possible, in order to maximize the gains of your stockholders. On the surface, this certainly appears to make sense. A prime example of this business model is Wal-mart Inc., Costco?s main competitor, who is famous for their high profit margins. Yet, Wal-mart is also notorious for their low employee wages and poor insurance coverage; according to one comparison of Wal-mart and Costco, in 2006, Wal-mart employees were spending 8% of their income on health care insurance- that is ?nearly twice the national average? (Cascio, 33). Additionally, almost half of the children of Wal-mart employees were uninsured or on public health care. By comparison, ?85% of Costco?s employees have health-insurance coverage, compared to less than half at Wal-mart and Target? (Cascio, 32). As of 2010, average hourly wages for Costco employees were $17 per hour, while average hourly wages at Sam?s Club were 42% less at just over $10 per hour (Schmaltz). By spending less on employee health benefits, we now have more money to invest back into the company. Surely, Friedman would approve of this. Won?t that give us the greatest profit?

??????????? Costco proves that the answer to that question may be no. Wal-mart may be able to save some money through depriving their employees, but the employee loyalty shown by Costco?s employees more than makes up for that difference. Atypical benefits for Costco?s employees include above average hourly wages, comprehensive health insurance coverage after 6 months, above average 401(k) matching, and mandated 86% of top position hires from within, although the real percentage ends up being 98%. Consequently, employees at Costco are much happier than their peers. Employee turnover for Costco is 17% per year, while Sam?s Club is 44% per year, close to the industry average. As Cascio explains, a conservative estimate of the full cost to replace an hourly employee at Costco or Sam?s Club is 60% of an employee?s yearly salary. At Costco, this is a cost of $21,216 per employee; at Wal-mart, this is a cost of $12,617. When you put these figures together, you realize that Costco saves almost $368 million each year in employee turnover costs. That is a staggering amount of lost profit. Yet, it is not just turnover that proves the worth of Costco?s exceptional employee treatment. Costco?s employees appear to be more productive than their competitors. In 2005, while Sam?s Club generated $37.1 billion in US Sales, Costco generated $43.05 billion with 38% fewer employees (Cascio, 35). Imagine if they had the same numbers of employees! Additionally, Costco?s employees sell $886 of sales per square foot of store, compared with $525 of sales per square foot at Sam?s Club and $461 at BJ?s Wholesale Club.

??????????? In almost every way, the loyalty and rewards shown to Costco?s stockholders only lead to increased profit for Costco. The good relations with their employees as well as suppliers and customers means that Costco?s inventory shrinkage is the lowest in the industry, which in turn, only helps to keep prices low for Costco?s consumers (Cascio, 32). With the figures from above, can you imagine what the financial statements would show if Sam?s Club and Costco had identical employee and warehouse operations?

??????????? Another famous business ethicist, Edward Freeman, argued in support of Costco?s ways. In his article ?Stakeholder Theory of the Modern Corporation?, he proposes that a corporation?s stakeholders actually include far more than the shareholders. Rather, this list includes employees, the community, suppliers, consumers, etc.; anyone who is necessary to the survival of the firm. He even asserts that groups that may not be considered essential to a firm?s survival, such as competitors, governments, neighbors, etc. may also be considered stakeholders. Freeman then lays down his list of ground rules for a company?s operations, which can be summarized as act in the best interests of all stakeholders, not just your shareholders. But why should we listen to Freeman? I would argue that Costco is a shining example of why the Stakeholder Theory is a sound model of business operations. Costco does a wonderful job of acting in the best interests of many stakeholders that their competitors ignore, particularly in the area of their consumers. Costco is cutthroat with their suppliers, dropping anyone that may give competitors a lower price, or forcing Starbucks to drop their prices in order to continue selling at Costco warehouses (Cascio, 32). Yet a lecture by Gary Kotzen just a few months ago explained how Costco has been an eco-friendly partner for over 20 years, and ?was instrumental in improving the quality of coffee by paying more for beans long before the issue of ?Fair Trade? entered popular culture? (Foster Global Business Forum).

??????????? This reflects back onto one of Costco?s core beliefs, which is the importance of quality. Even though it cost more, Costco was willing to buy better coffee because the quality at their stores would be higher. This can be found all over their product lines, especially as Costco specializes in higher-end products than Sam?s Club, BJ?s, or Target; for example, Costco has been known to carry Ralph Lauren and Prada. As a result, Costco has attracted a different sort of following than Sam?s Club; Costco?s consumers tend to be more affluent, or in the upper middle class of society. This means that when economic times get tough, Costco?s consumers are far more willing and able to stay loyal with their business. This is why, from 1997-2007, Costco?s stock climbed 222%, while Wal-mart?s climbed 146% and the S&P 500 climbed only 59% (Mueller). Even during the recent economic downtown, Costco?s stocks showed a steady price increase from 2009 to late 2011 (Freedland). In an interview in late 2009, then-CEO Jim Sinegal explained that Costco?s continued success was due to their high customer return; as he explains, ?the frequency with which customers are shopping with Costco is the highest it?s ever been? (Schonberger). This increased inventory turnover means that financially, Costco is far sounder than their competitors, due to a lower debt to assets ratio.

??????????? It is clear that through their fair and honest treatment of all stakeholders, Costco ends up with the financial stronghold, both short-term and long-term. After all, the average Costco store in 2004 totaled $115 million in annual sales, almost double the figure for Sam?s Club. The money does not lie. Costco?s wide range of stakeholder friendly actions, to their suppliers, employees, and consumers alike, has given them a strong competitive advantage. Their satisfied employees boast the most efficient and effective work in the industry, and their consumers are highly loyal, even in tough economic times. Costco has achieved all of this while acting in an ethical manner in several ways; working only with certain organic or community-minded suppliers, ensuring a good quality of life for employees, and focusing on product quality rather than price or profit. They have truly proven that Freeman?s Stakeholder Theory works for a large, competitive industry setting, even in an economy suffering from a recession. One might even go so far as to say that Costco?s personal social ethics are deontological; after all, according to their mission statement, their ultimate goal is to reward their shareholders. However, they can only achieve this by obeying their full code of ethics: to obey the law, to take care of their members, to take care of their employees, and to respect their suppliers. It is clear that treating their stakeholders right is essential to their operations, and it is equally as clear that their vision works. Costco has proven that stakeholder theory leads to higher profits, and happier shareholders as well.
