FixMeStick

When extra-devious malware defeats your antivirus, or when you can't install protection because malware has pwned the system, you (being a tech genius) might try a bootable rescue CD. However, many users don't have the tech skills to burn an ISO image or deal with the often-arcane interface of bootable solutions. For them, FixMeStick ($49.99 direct) will do the job. The design of this USB-based security tool centers on making malware cleanup as easy as possible, even for users with limited tech abilities.

Getting Started
To start using FixMeStick ?on an infected system that can still boot into Windows, just insert it and wait for Windows to launch the "Run FixMeStick" program. Users with more security knowledge may have chosen to disable USB autorun; in that case, launch the program manually.

This little program does no scanning. Rather, it configures your system so that at the next reboot the FixMeStick will show up as an operating system option on the boot menu. To help users who may not have seen a boot menu before, it displays a screenshot and explains what to do. From here you just click the button to reboot and run FixMeStick.

FixMeStick is the default option when the boot menu appears. Pressing Enter will launch it immediately, but if you don't it will auto-launch in 30 seconds. After a few minutes of setup in the background, it's ready to go.

If Windows won't boot at all, running FixMeStick may still be simple. Turn off the PC, insert the USB key, and turn it on again. If you're lucky, your PC is configured to boot from USB. If that doesn't seem to work, tech support can explain how to tweak the BIOS so it will boot from the device.

Fully Automated
The next thing you do to advance the process is...nothing! FixMeStick does everything for you. In fact, its main screen recommends that you just go take a break for anywhere from 30 minutes to a couple hours. Cleanup on my infested test systems took 30-40 minutes.

Unlike a bootable rescue CD, this USB device is fully writeable. That means it can check for program updates and download new malware definitions that will be stored right on the USB key. After initializing the three scanning engines it launches right into a full scan. A warning banner appears if the scan has discovered malicious files.

On completion of a scan, it offers two choices. Most users will just choose to fix the computer, without worrying about details. I live for details, so I chose to view the results before fixing problems. One, two, or all three antivirus engines may have detected a given threat. FixMeStick lists the engines that detected each threat, along with the threat name used by that engine's company. There's an option to keep a given file rather than send it to quarantine, but you should only use that under instruction from tech support.

Once FixMeStick has finished cleaning up, you exit the program, unplug the device, and reboot into Windows. Your browser opens to a debriefing page online. Here you can share your FixMeStick experience on social networking sites, offer feedback, or contact the help team.

Collateral Damage
Why would you need to contact the help team after a successful cleanup? Because FixMeStick can be a bit heavy-handed, wiping out files that it shouldn't. When its engines detect a valid file infested by malware, it can't disinfect the file back to its original status. All it can do is toss that file into quarantine. If this happens to an essential Windows file, you may be hosed.

One of my malware-infested test systems seemed to boot Windows but never displayed the desktop. That's a problem usually solved by bringing up Task Manager and manually launching Windows Explorer. However, Task Manager reported explorer.exe missing, apparently wiped out by FixMeStick. Another test system went into a noisy, never-ending cycle of login and logout, each with its own musical accompaniment.

I solved the first problem myself by booting back into the FixMeStick and using its Undo Quarantine feature. As the product warned, this completely undoes the most recent cleanup, restoring all files including the nasty ones. I rescanned, but this time chose to keep explorer.exe. That did leave me with an infected explorer.exe, but at least the system booted.

Remote Support
For the second problem, I supplied FixMeStick's log file to tech support. They identified the problem and supplied me with instructions for getting connected to their remote control chat-based help system. In a coming update, which existing FixMeSticks will pick up automatically, this process will just require clicking a button. At present, it's a bit more complex.

A special key combination opened a Linux command window for me. By carefully typing in a list of commands supplied by tech support, I installed Firefox, downloaded and installed their support software, and launched it.

At this point tech support took over. The support agent identified the missing file and put a clean copy in its place. After that the system booted properly.

(AP) ? From this island nation in the South China Sea, U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta sent a message Saturday that America's new military focus on the Asia-Pacific is not intended to raise tensions in the region or threaten Beijing.

The Pentagon chief appeared to offer an olive branch to the communist power and said often feuding rivals must learn to work better together for the benefit of the entire region.

Delivering his most extensive thoughts to date on the fragile state of U.S.-China relations, Panetta said neither side is naive about their disagreements.

"We both understand the differences we have, we both understand the conflicts we have, but we also both understand that there really is no other alternative but for both of us to engage and to improve our communications and to improve our (military) relationship," Panetta said at a security conference in Singapore.

At the same time, however, Panetta said Asian nations must find a way to resolve their own conflicts because the U.S. cannot always come charging in to help.

Tensions between the U.S. and China reverberate across the region, and are often focused on America's support of Taiwan, which China regards as a breakaway province and threatens to use force to block any Taiwanese bid for formal independence.

Another area of dispute is the South China Sea, which Beijing claims almost entirely as its own. But Taiwan, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei and the Philippines also have territorial claims.

More recently the U.S. has been vocal in blaming China for cyberattacks that emanate from the country and steal critical data from U.S. government agencies and private American companies.

On that front, Panetta said U.S. and Chinese leaders have talked about developing teams that can work together on difficult issues. That could involve how to exchange information on computer-based threats and whether they can agree on standards for the use of cybercapabilities.

The goal, Panetta said, is for the U.S. and China to develop the ability to communicate when disputes arise so that they can be resolved peacefully.

Defense experts attending the conference questioned Panetta extensively about China, with one query coming from a member of China's People's Liberation Army. But officials also noted that Beijing did not send any of its senior leaders to the conference. It was not clear why, although some officials suggested that China's leaders were busy with internal issues.

Questioners asked whether adding more U.S. military to the region might embolden some smaller nations and risk triggering more conflicts. They also wondered aloud whether China's leaders boycotted the conference in protest over America's new strategy for the region.

"I don't think we should take the attitude that just because we improve their capabilities that we're asking for more trouble," Panetta said.

Panetta also issued a strong call for Asian nations to set up a code of conduct, including rules governing maritime rights and navigation in the South China Sea, and then develop a forum where disputes can be settled.

"It isn't enough for the United States to come charging in and try and resolve these issues," Panetta said, adding that the Asian nations must develop ways to peacefully solve their own problems.

Panetta's speech was designed to give a more detailed explanation about the new defense strategy. It puts more focus on the Asia-Pacific, including plans to increase the number of U.S. military personnel, warships and other assets in the region over the next several years.

Specifically, he said that by 2020, about 60 percent of the fleet will be assigned there as part of a new strategy to increase U.S. presence in Asia. Currently, the Navy has about 285 ships, with roughly half assigned to each coast, but that total may decline a bit as some ships are retired in the coming years and may not be replaced.

The current fleet includes 11 aircraft carriers, with six assigned to the Pacific. The West Coast total is expected to go down to five, but Panetta said he will maintain six carriers in the Pacific over the long term.

While noting it may take years to complete the transition, Panetta said that U.S. budget problems and cutbacks would not get in the way of changes. He said the U.S. Defense Department has money in the five-year budget plan to meet those goals.

He said he is looking forward to visiting China later this year, adding that he wants to see the U.S. and China deepen their military ties, including on counterdrug programs and humanitarian aid.

U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., questioned Panetta's optimism about relations with China, but said he hopes it works out. He added that the Pentagon must begin planning for the possibility that an additional $500 million may have to be cut from the defense budget early next year if lawmakers can't agree on spending cuts in the next several months.

Panetta has said he believes Congress will eventually find a way to avoid the automatic cuts.

Singapore is Panetta's second stop on a nine-day trip through Asia, and is expected to travel to Vietnam and India.

(AP) ? The attorney for suspended New Orleans linebacker Jonathan Vilma says a ledger of under-the-table cash bonuses and fines for Saints players shows no proof of bounties placed on targeted opponents.

Lawyer Peter Ginsberg said the leaking of the ledger to the media shows how "misguided and irresponsible" NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has been in handling the bounty investigation of the Saints.

People familiar with the ledger told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Friday that the document indicates payments of $1,000 for plays called "cart-offs" and $400 for "whacks," as well as $100 fines for mental errors.

Ginsberg asserted that the commissioner interviewed the person who kept the ledger, and knows "the 'whacks' and 'cart-off,' though regrettably named, were descriptions of good, clean, legal plays, and that any dirty or penalized play resulted in fines."

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said he had no comment on the latest statement by Ginsberg, who is representing Vilma both in the player's appeal of his season-long suspension as well as in a defamation lawsuit against Goodell. The defamation lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court in New Orleans and Goodell has until July 5 to respond to it.

The NFL has suspended four players ? all of them either current or former Saints ? in connection with the bounty probe. Vilma was suspended for all of the 2012 season, Green Bay defensive end Anthony Hargrove was suspended eight games, Saints defensive end Will Smith was suspended four games, and Cleveland linebacker Scott Fujita three. All four players have appealed their suspensions.

Ginsberg's statement about the ledger is the latest of several instances in which players or their representatives have debated the significance of evidence gathered by the NFL in its probe of the bounty program that the league said ex-Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams ran from 2009 to 2011.

The NFL, in its initial report, highlighted an excerpt from an email in which an associate of Saints head coach Sean Payton said "put me down for $5,000" on Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers. However, marketing agent Mike Ornstein, the author of the email, said the comment ? which was part of an email sent from federal prison to a team spokesman and forwarded to the coaching staff ? was part of a running joke he had with Williams, dating to when the Minnesota Vikings suggested the Saints had placed a bounty on then-quarterback Brett Favre in the 2010 NFC title game.

In May, Mary Jo White, a former U.S. attorney hired by the NFL, said a signed declaration by Hargrove confirmed the existence of a bounty program, and that Hargrove was instructed to lie about it ? and did lie about it ? when first questioned by league investigators. But Hargrove later said the NFL mischaracterized his statement, which the AP also obtained. The declaration does not go into specifics about what Hargrove knew or did not know about a bounty program in New Orleans, and it does not explicitly say that he lied.

The NFL has not discussed the ledger in any of its official reports or public comments, but the document's existence appears to support the league's contention that the Saints operated an improper pay-for-performance program. Whether it confirms that actual bounties were placed on targeted opponents is not yet clear, as the document has not been made public.

"The truth is that Jonathan Vilma gave no money, incentive or encouragement ever ? not at any time in his eight-year career ? to injure or knock out of any game any player with a dirty or unsportsmanlike hit," Ginsberg said in a statement. "The facts are plain and simple. During the three seasons in question, Jonathan Vilma was one of the least penalized players not only on the Saints, but in the NFL."

According to STATS, LLC, Vilma has played in 42 games since 2009 and has been penalized three times in that span. Two-thirds of NFL defensive players who played in 40 or more games during that same period were penalized more than Vilma.

(AP) ? President Barack Obama has written a letter to the Polish president expressing "regret" for an inadvertent verbal gaffe that caused a storm of controversy in Poland this week.

Obama on Tuesday used the expression "a Polish death camp" while honoring a Polish World War II resistance hero rather than wording that would have made clear that he meant a death camp that Nazi Germany operated on Polish soil during its wartime occupation of Poland.

Warsaw has been waging a campaign for years against phrases such as "Polish death camps" or "Polish concentration camps" to refer to Auschwitz, Treblinka and other German killing sites. The language deeply offends Polish sensitivities because Poles not only had no role in running the camps, but were considered racially inferior by the Germans and were themselves murdered in them in huge numbers.

"In referring to 'a Polish death camp' rather than 'a Nazi death camp in German-occupied Poland,' I inadvertently used a phrase that has caused many Poles anguish over the years and that Poland has rightly campaigned to eliminate from public discourse around the world," Obama wrote. "I regret the error and agree that this moment is an opportunity to ensure that this and future generations know the truth."

"The events of the past few days and the U.S. president's reply may, in my opinion, mark a very important moment in the struggle for historical truth," Komorowski told reporters.

Obama made the verbal slip-up while posthumously awarding the Medal of Freedom to Jan Karski, a resistance fighter who struggled to tell the outside world about the murder of Jews in his country. He smuggled himself into the Warsaw Ghetto and a death camp, witnessing the atrocities committed against the Jews firsthand. He then took that information to President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and other Allied leaders, imploring the world to act.

Karski later became a professor at Georgetown University and died in 2000.

For days, Obama's words have dominated the news in Poland. Prime Minister Donald Tusk said the entire Polish nation felt affected.

"We always react in the same way when ignorance, lack of knowledge, bad intentions lead to such a distortion of history, so painful for us here in Poland, in a country which suffered like no other in Europe during World War II," Tusk said Wednesday.

Komorowski's reaction was more muted. He said Wednesday that he knew Obama's words did not reflect any bad intensions but that the words were nonetheless "unjust and painful." He wrote that day to Obama, and Obama's letter came in reply to that.

In his response Obama noted that "the Polish people suffered terribly under the brutal Nazi occupation during World War II."

"In pursuit of their goals of destroying the Polish nation and Polish culture and exterminating European Jewry, the Nazis killed some six million Polish citizens, including three million Polish Jews during the Holocaust," Obama wrote. "The bravery of Poles in the underground resistance is one of history's great stories of heroism and courage."
