Disputed articles in Egypt's draft constitution

CAIRO (AP) ? An Islamist-dominated panel is voting on Egypt's draft constitution, the country's first charter after the uprising that toppled Hosni Mubarak. The draft largely reflects the conservative vision of the Islamists, with articles that rights activists, liberals and Christians fear will lead to restrictions on the rights of women and minorities and civil liberties in general.

Omissions of certain articles, such as bans on slavery or promises to adhere to international rights treaties, were equally worrying to critics of the new draft, who pulled out from the panel before the vote.

Here are some of the disputed articles:

? As in past constitutions, the new draft says that the "principles of Islamic law" will be the basis of law. Previously, the term "principles" allowed wide leeway in interpreting Shariah. But in the draft, a separate new article is added that seeks to define "principles" by pointing to particular theological doctrines and their rules. That could give Islamists the tool for insisting on stricter implementation of rulings of Shariah.

? A new article states that Egypt's most respected Islamic institution, Al-Azhar, must be consulted on any matters related to Shariah, a measure critics fear will lead to oversight of legislation by clerics.

? An article underlines that the state will protect "the true nature of the Egyptian family ... and promote its morals and values," phrasing that is vague and suggests state control over the contents of such arts forms as books and films.

? The draft contains no article specifically establishing equality between men and women because of disputes over the phrasing. However, it maintains that a woman must balance her duties toward family and outside work, suggesting that she can be held accountable if her public role conflicts with her family duties. No such article is mentioned for men.

? An article bans insulting or defaming the prophet and messengers, but is vague about what constitutes an insult, raising concerns of restrictions to freedom of expression.

? An article seeking to ensure people's dignity bans "insulting humans", a vague phrasing that rights activists say contradicts freedom of expression.

? An article maintains that the state supports the arts, science and literature and works to implement them in a way that serves society. That has raised concerns that some arts deemed not in the service of society may be restricted or censored.

? An article preserves the right of the military to try civilians before military tribunals in cases for crimes that harm the armed forces without restrictions, despite an outcry from activists who were calling for the abolishing of such tribunals. More than 11,000 civilians were tried before military tribunals during the post-Mubarak transition overseen by the military.

An Introduction to Mesothelioma Lung Cancer | Lung Mesothelioma

Lung cancer and mesothelioma are two illnesses that are typically connected with exposure to asbestos. Pleural mesothelioma refers to a kind of mesothelioma that affects the lining of the chest cavity ad the lungs. Pleural mesothelioma is also called mesothelioma lung cancer.

Mesothelioma lung cancer is the most commonly-occurring kind of mesothelioma, accounting for more than two-thirds of all mesothelioma cases.

Mesothelioma lung cancer? affects the pleura, which refers to the membrane that envelops the lungs and the chest. Like the other kinds of mesothelioma, mesothelioma lung cancer can be tricky to identify as well as being commonly misdiagnosed. Thus, if you have been previously exposed to asbestos, you should notify your doctor in order to properly identify mesothelioma lung cancer.

Even though a finding of mesothelioma lung cancer is definitely grim, it does not mean that the patient does not have options. There are new treatment options available in addition to different clinical trials.

CAUSES

The cause of mesothelioma lung cancer is no other than asbestos. Asbestos fibers are tiny, almost weightless, tough and easily carried by the wind. They are used in different construction and industrial projects.

Asbestos is easily breathed in or ingested and its small size allows it to easily enter the tiniest passageways in the lungs directly to the pleura. Asbestos works by ruining the natural defense mechanism of the body.

Symptoms

The symptoms of mesothelioma lung cancer are non-specific and can also occur in less threatening medical conditions. On the other hand, if have been previously exposed to asbestos, it is advisable to take be proactive and observant regarding the possible symptoms of mesothelioma lung cancer. You should go for frequent checkups with a doctor and take care that he knows of your apprehensions as well as your contact with asbestos.

Mesothelioma lung cancer is dose-dependent which means that you have a bigger risk of getting it the longer and more significantly exposed you are to asbestos. It also has an impact on the speed of your diagnosis with mesothelioma lung cancer though this illness can have long periods of latency spanning ten to forty years from exposure to the asbestos.

Breathlessness

Aside from this, the patient may also experience some coughing. In rare cases, the patient may acquire huskiness or he can cough up blood.

Chest pain

This is typically a nonspecific symptom and it can be felt in the shoulder, arm or upper abdomen. This symptom, along with breathlessness, are the most common symptoms and they are also commony the first symptoms to present.
Weight Loss

Unexplained reduction in weight is mentioned in one-third of all cases of mesothelioma lung cancer.

Pleural effusion

This symptom is caused by an excessive build up of fluid between the lungs and chest linings. Pleural effusion can lead to a difficulty in breathing and chest pain but it may also have no symptoms in which case it can be detected during a physical exam or on an x-ray.

Night sweats

This is an uncommon sign of mesothelioma lung cancer and can be accompanied by chills and fever.

Attack frees Nigeria police inmates, leaves 2 dead

LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) ? Gunmen attacked a major police station near Nigeria's capital Monday that holds members of a radical Islamist sect, freeing prisoners and killing two police officers in the latest assault on the nation's beleaguered security forces.

The attack on the Special Anti-Robbery Squad's station near Abuja came as the death toll for suicide car bombings Sunday at a major military base rose Monday to at least 30 people killed, a hospital official said. While the sect known as Boko Haram has yet to claim the attacks, both strikes bear similarities to other assaults carried out by a group the Nigerian government seems unable to stop.

The attack on the police station began around 2 a.m. Monday, with a "large number" of gunmen killing the officers and allowing about 30 prisoners inside the facility to escape, federal police spokesman Frank Mba said in a statement. Two suspected gunmen were arrested after the attack and 25 of the prisoners have been captured, Mba said.

Authorities said none of those who escaped were terrorism suspects and that the five still at large were being held on suspicion of being armed robbers.

An investigation into the attack has begun, Mba said, while the nation's top police commander has ordered "water-tight security around all government and police-related facilities nationwide."

The robbery squad's station has come under international scrutiny after Amnesty International published a report this month describing the facility as a former slaughterhouse where chains still hang from the ceiling. Amnesty's report, which included allegations of Boko Haram suspects being abused and held indefinitely without charges, estimated more than 100 suspected sect members are held at the station. At the time of the report's release, police officials said they would investigate Amnesty's claims.

Boko Haram, whose name means "Western education is sacrilege" in the Hausa language of Nigeria's north, has demanded the release of all its captive members and has called for strict Shariah law to be implemented across the entire country. The sect has killed both Christians and Muslims in their attacks, as well as soldiers and security forces.

The group, which speaks to journalists in telephone conference calls at times of its choosing, could not be immediately reached for comment Monday.

The sect is blamed for killing more than 760 people this year alone, according to an Associated Press count. Western diplomats and military officials say the sect has loose ties to both al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb and Somalia's al-Shabab, while also offering fighters to join Islamists now controlling northern Mali. That has led to worries the group will grow only more violent as time goes on.

On Sunday, the suicide bombings hit Jaji, home to Nigeria's Armed Forces Command and Staff College, one of the country's most important military colleges. While authorities initially said the blast killed 11 people, an official at the base's medical center said Monday at least 30 died from the blasts and another 45 others had been wounded in the attack. The official spoke on condition of anonymity as the military hospital bars its staff from speaking to journalists.

Brig. Gen. Bola Koleoso, a military spokesman, said he had no new information Monday about the bombings.

Despite sending soldiers into troubled northern cities, Nigeria's military has been unable to stop the attacks and has alienated locals with heavy-handed tactics and retaliatory attacks that have seen dozens of civilians killed at a time. Meanwhile, soldiers and security forces routinely have been killed in guerrilla attacks by Boko Haram.

The suicide bombings and police station attack comes after Nigerian authorities offered a total of $1.8 million in rewards for information leading to the arrest of top Boko Haram members.

Jockeying under way to replace Rep. Jackson Jr.

(AP) ? The jockeying to replace Jesse Jackson Jr. began before the ink was dry on the former congressman's resignation letter.

Among those expressing an interest: Chicago aldermen, a former NFL linebacker and a defense attorney who represented R&B singer R. Kelly and former Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

But as the field of would-be successors grows to a dozen or more names ? one of whom may be another member of the Jackson family ? party leaders and political analysts say a stampede of candidates could pose risks for the Democratic stronghold. Spread the field of candidates too thin, they say, and it becomes easier for a more conservative candidate ? or anyone else party leaders don't want ? to pull off a win.

The possibility so worried Democratic Congressman Bobby Rush, a close friend of the Jacksons, that within hours of the resignation he had these words for anyone thinking of running: "Cool your jets."

"My fear is that there is going to be so many wannabes blinded by ambition ... that we could find a tea party (candidate winning)," he said during a news conference. "That would be a travesty."

In a resignation letter sent Wednesday to House Speaker John Boehner, the 47-year-old son of a famed civil rights leader cited his ongoing treatment for bipolar disorder and admitted "my share of mistakes." He also confirmed publically for the first time that he is the subject of a federal probe and is cooperating with investigators.

Federal authorities are reportedly investigating Jackson's possible misuse of campaign funds. The House Ethics Committee is investigating his dealings with Blagojevich, who is serving a prison sentence for trying to sell President Barack Obama's former Senate seat.

Jackson has not been charged with wrongdoing. Attempts by The Associated Press to locate him for comment Thursday were unsuccessful, and his family also could not be reached.

Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn, a Democrat, is expected to schedule a primary and general election in the coming days.

Cook County Clerk David Orr said officials want to hold the elections on the same dates as previously scheduled elections for municipal officials, which are set for a Feb. 26 primary and an April 9 general election.

Orr said holding the 2nd Congressional District election those same dates would save money. But a federal judge will have to approve those dates because they do not conform to state law regarding deadlines for petition filing and when the election must be held.

Whenever it happens, the Democratic primary will be the race to win. The district, which stretches from Chicago's south side to several southern suburbs and rural areas, is heavily Democratic. Earlier this month voters there easily re-elected Jackson, who faced lesser-known Republican and independent candidates, despite the allegations swirling and the fact that he barely campaigned due to a leave of absence that began in June.

Longtime Chicago political strategist Thom Serafin said that makes Rush's doom-and-gloom prediction of a split field leading to a tea party victory highly unlikely.

Serafin said that because of the truncated election process, candidates who already are in office, are organized, and have shown they can raise money have the advantage. Those include longtime Chicago Alderman Anthony Beale, whose ward is in the district, and Alderman Will Burns, a former state representative.

"There's little doubt based on the district's history that a Democrat will be elected here," Serafin said. "The big question is who can organize and 'show me' they're the real deal? It's much simpler for someone who has been in the game for some time to put that together."

State Sen. Toi Hutchinson said she is weighing a bid. So is former U.S. Rep. Debbie Halvorson, who represented another district in Congress for one term before losing re-election in 2010. Halvorson was Jackson's first credible challenger in years when she ran a spirited campaign against him in the March primary.

"It looks like a lot of egos are jockeying for positions right now," Halvorson said. "I'm the only one who had the nerve to run against him. They need someone who is going to step in from day one."

Chicago attorney Sam Adam Jr. also has said he'd be interested. Adam is a recognizable face and name, having represented Blagojevich in his first trial in 2010, when the former governor was convicted on one count and the jury deadlocked on the remaining counts. Adam also was R. Kelly's lawyer when the singer was acquitted on child pornography charges.

Jackson's brother, Jonathan Jackson, and his wife Sandi Jackson ? who currently serves as an alderman representing a part of the district ? also have been mentioned, though neither has commented on a possible run.

Serafin said the Jackson name could draw a strong base of voters to the polls. If roughly 135,000 to 200,000 voters turn out and the field is split between multiple candidates, that base could be enough, he said.

Among the other possibilities are Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle and state senator-elect Napoleon Harris, who played in the NFL and owns two pizza franchises. His campaign aide, Curtis Thompson, told The Chicago Sun-Times Harris was taking the holidays to think about it.

Lenovo ThinkPad Twist review: an old form factor gets new life with Windows 8

Lenovo ThinkPad Twist review

It used to be that "convertible PC" could mean only one thing: a laptop whose display swiveled around, folding down into tablet mode. Now that Windows 8 is here, though, the category has become a bit muddied. How else to describe our recent collection of reviews? In just the past few weeks alone, we've tested a laptop whose screen folds all the way back, an Ultrabook whose display flips inside the hinge and yet another with a slide-out keyboard. Anything goes -- at least until consumers decide which form factor they like best.

But when Lenovo calls its new ThinkPad Twist a convertible, you can rest assured it's using the old-school definition. As the name implies, it has a rotating screen that allows it to be used as a 12-inch slate. And, like all the business-friendly ThinkPads that came before it, it sports a well-engineered keyboard, a secondary set of touch buttons and, of course, that signature red pointing stick. Now, though, it runs a much more finger-friendly OS, and has a touchpad that can support all the new gestures in Windows 8. It's one of several new touch-capable notebooks from Lenovo, but it's the only one geared toward business users. So is this worth the upgrade from an older ThinkPad? And is it a better buy than Lenovo's other Win 8 convertible, the IdeaPad Yoga 13? Read on to find out.

Israel holding fire during Egypt premier's visit to Gaza

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Israel offered to suspend its offensive in the Gaza Strip on Friday during a brief visit by Egypt's premier there if militants refrain from firing rockets at Israel, an official said, but the Palestinians unleashed a fresh salvo.

An official in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said the Israeli leader was responding to an Egyptian request.

Gaza militants stepped up their barrages of rocket fire into Israel as Hesham Kandil crossed into Gaza before midday through the only border post with Egypt, heavily guarded by Egyptian security personnel wearing flak jackets and carrying assault rifles.

He was greeted by Gaza's Hamas prime minister, Ismail Haniyeh, who ventured out in public for the first time since Israel launched the offensive Wednesday by assassinating the militant group's military commander.

Israel told the Egyptians the military "would hold its fire on the condition that during that period, there won't be hostile fire from Gaza into Israel," the Israeli official said. "Prime Minister Netanyahu is committed to the peace treaty with Egypt, which is in the strategic interest of both countries," he added, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss the diplomatic exchange.

There were no immediate reports of Israeli retaliation for the latest salvo. Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said the militants were making a clear statement. "There's no intention whatsoever to stop firing into Israel," he said.

Three days of fierce fighting between Israel and Gaza militants has widened the instability gripping the region, straining already frayed Israel-Egypt relations. The Cairo government recalled its ambassador in protest.

Egypt said Kandil's three-hour visit Friday was meant as a show of solidarity with the Palestinian territory's militant Hamas rulers.

Egyptian intelligence officials involved in negotiations to end previous rounds of fighting are accompanying Kandil on his visit, an Egyptian diplomat said, suggesting it was more than a display of support.

The diplomat said Gaza militants have told Egyptian intelligence officials they would be willing to hold their fire if Israel would commit to mediation to stop its military operation and targeted killings.

Word of the possible pause in the fighting came after a night of fierce exchanges and signals that Israel might be preparing to invade Gaza. Overnight, the military said it targeted about 150 of the sites Gaza gunmen use to fire rockets at Israel, as well as ammunition warehouses, bringing to 450 the number of sites struck since the operation began Wednesday.

Israeli troops, tanks and armored personnel carriers massed near the Palestinian territory, signaling a ground invasion might be imminent.

Militants unleashed dozens of rocket barrages overnight.

Fighting between the two sides escalated sharply Thursday with a first-ever rocket attack from Gaza on the Tel Aviv area, menacing Israel's most densely populated area. No casualties were reported there, but three people died in the country's rocket-scarred south when a projectile slammed into an apartment building.

The death toll in Gaza was 19, including five children, according to Palestinian health officials.

Early Friday, 85 missiles exploded within 45 minutes in Gaza City, sending black pillars of smoke towering above the coastal strip's largest city. The military said it was targeting underground rocket-launching sites.

One missile flattened sections of the Interior Ministry, leaving a huge pile of rubble, and another hit an uninhabited house belonging to a senior Hamas commander. Those strikes, together with an attack on a generator building near Haniyeh's home, signaled that Israel was expanding its offensive beyond military targets.

Ten-month-old Haneen Tafesh was killed Thursday when flying shrapnel from an air attack on a field next to her family's shack struck her in the head.

"What did she do? Did she fire any rockets?" asked her 23-year-old father, Khaled Tafesh, as he waited outside the Shifa hospital morgue in Gaza City, waiting for the funeral of his only child to begin.

Israel and Hamas had largely observed an informal truce since Israel's devastating incursion into Gaza four years ago, but rocket fire and Israeli airstrikes on militant operations continued sporadically.

The Israeli offensive has not deterred the militants from firing more than 400 rockets aimed at southern Israel, the military said. On Thursday, they also unleashed for the first time the most powerful weapons in their arsenal ? Iranian-made Fajr-5 rockets capable of reaching Tel Aviv.

The two rockets that struck closest to Tel Aviv appear to have landed in the Mediterranean Sea, defense officials said, and another hit an open area on Tel Aviv's southern outskirts.

No injuries were reported, but the rocket fire sowed panic in Tel Aviv and made the prospect of a ground incursion more likely. The government later approved the mobilization of up to 30,000 reservists for a possible invasion.

Netanyahu said the army was hitting Hamas hard with what he called surgical strikes, and warned of a "significant widening" of the Gaza operation. Israel will "continue to take whatever action is necessary to defend our people," said Netanyahu, who is up for re-election in January.

At least 12 trucks were seen transporting tanks and armored personnel carriers toward Gaza late Thursday, and buses carrying soldiers headed toward the border area.

An Israeli ground offensive could be costly to both sides. In the last Gaza war, Israel devastated parts of the territory, setting back Hamas' fighting capabilities but also paying the price of increasing diplomatic isolation because of a civilian death toll numbering in the hundreds.

In the current round of fighting, the civilian casualties have been relatively low and the Israeli strikes seem to be more surgical.

In other ways, the latest hostilities are reminiscent of the first days of that three-week offensive against Hamas. Israel also caught Hamas off guard then with a barrage of missile strikes and threatened to follow up with a ground offensive.

Since then, Israel has improved its missile defense systems, but it is facing a more heavily armed Hamas. Israel estimates the militants have 12,000 rockets, including more sophisticated weapons from Iran and from Libyan stockpiles plundered after the fall of Moammar Gadhafi's regime there last year.

Petraeus: I didn't share classified info with Broadwell

Just-resigned CIA Director David Petraeus says he will testify this week at congressional hearings looking into the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, as new details emerge about the emails that helped end his career. NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports.

By NBC News staff

Ex-CIA Director David Petraeus reportedly said in an interview that he did not share classified information with his biographer Paula Broadwell, the woman with whom he is said to have had an affair.

In a series of interviews with Kyra Phillips of Headline News, Petraeus also said his resignation as CIA director was not tied to his upcoming testimony on the attack in Benghazi that killed four Americans. He is due to testify Friday in closed-door Senate and House hearings, the first formal congressional inquiries into the September attack.

Petraeus? comments, which came in a series of interviews with Phillips beginning last week, were first reported Thursday.

?"In our first conversation," Phillips said, Petraeus "had told me he had engaged in something dishonorable. He sought to do the honorable thing in response -- and that was to come forward. He was very clear that he screwed up terribly ... even felt fortunate to have a wife who is far better than he deserves."

Petraeus told Phillips he had not spoken with Broadwell since the scandal broke.

"He insisted to me that he has never passed classified information to Paula Broadwell," Phillips said. "He said this has nothing to do with Benghazi, and he wants to testify. He will testify."

Defense officials told NBC News on Thursday that earlier this week, the FBI came to Army officials with material discovered in Broadwell?s emails and asked, ?Is this real and is it classified?? After Army officials determined it was indeed classified material, the FBI launched a search of Broadwell?s North Carolina home, with her consent.

The Defense officials could not reveal the nature of the classified material.

On Wednesday, an Army official told NBC News that Broadwell had lost her security clearance.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Broadwell?s security clearance and access to classified material was suspended because of an address she gave to an alumni symposium on Oct. 26 at the University of Denver, which appeared on the video-sharing site YouTube. Broadwell holds a master's degree in international study from the school.

In the address, Broadwell talked about security at the consulate in Benghazi, Libya.

"Any time that the Army has a reason to believe that an officer has mishandled classified information, there is grounds for such action," the Army official said, referencing the YouTube clip.

Broadwell, a West Point graduate and former military intelligence officer, is a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves, though she is not currently on active duty, according to Pentagon records obtained by NBC News.

Multiple government and law enforcement officials have told NBC News that Petraeus, a retired four-star general who is married, had an extramarital affair with Broadwell, 40. Broadwell, who also married, authored ?All In,? a book about Petraeus? leadership philosophy.

FBI investigators who looked into a series of anonymous threatening emails sent to Tampa, Fla., socialite Jill Kelley later determined they were authored by Broadwell, multiple government and law enforcement officials have told NBC News.

Petraeus will testify Friday about the attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi before the Senate Intelligence Committee after he briefs the House Intelligence Committee.

NBC News' Jim Miklaszewski and Courtney Kube contributed to this report.

Hosting an at-home spa party is perfect for a relaxing, budget-friendly bridal luncheon or bachelorette party.? Spending time with the girls is good for your mental health!? Plus, a relaxed bride is a beautiful bride.

A bride can plan this herself, or the maid of honor can.? You can do this for the wedding, or for no reason other than girl time.

Here?s what you?ll need:

  • Single-use mud masks ? from Garden Apothecary ($3 each; save 15% with promo code: LOVEFALL)
  • Nail polish, nail polish remover (provide a variety of colors, or whatever color you want your bridesmaids to wear)
  • Manicure supplies (cuticle remover, cuticle oil, hand scrub, nail file, nail clippers) ? Check Bath and Body Works? True Blue Spa Perfect Mani Set ($25)
  • Beverages (alcoholic and non-alcoholic)
  • Main dish or finger foods you can prepare in advance
  • Gift

Other suggestions:

  • Foot spa/massager
  • Paraffin wax

So, most of us know how awesome Pinterest is for ideas.? I suggest checking out Pinterest for your beverage and food recipes, and gift ideas.? You can even find some amazing nail polish tutorials on Pinterest.? If you haven?t been to Pinterest yet, it?s like inspiration overload.? And almost everything has a tutorial.

For my spa party, we did DIY facials, manicures, and pedicures.? I made a huge batch of chickpea salad, and served an apple cider cocktail (and water, of course).? At the end of the party, I served peppermint mochas and peppermint bark ? a real treat!? All my friends took home a brown sugar body scrub we made during the party.

What to do:

When everyone arrives, have cocktails and food ready.? Just mingle for a while before you start getting busy with your DIY spa day.? If serving a meal, allow enough time for everyone to eat.

Facial: Once your friends are ready to get started, begin with the facials (FYI ? tell your friends to come without makeup and dressed in comfy clothes!).? Take the single use mud mask and mix with 2-4 tsp water for a smooth, thick consistency.? Apply the mask with your hands to all parts of the face, avoiding the eyes.? That?s it!? Let the mask dry before washing off.? It will rinse off easily with water.

Bonus: The mud masks I used double as a face scrub when mixed with honey instead of water, and that makes a nice treatment for the next day!

Manicure/Pedicure: While the mud masks are drying, guests can start on their manicure.? Set up a station where everyone can share the supplies without being too crowded.? Sitting around a coffee table or kitchen table is perfect.? Here?s how to do the manicure:

  • Wash hands with soap or sugar scrub
  • While cuticles are still soft, remove them with cuticle removing tool
  • Clip nails with nail clipper to desired length and shape
  • File nails so edges and surfaces are smooth

*At this point, it?s probably time to wash off the mud mask, and get a drink refill!*

  • Paint nails (base coat, 2-3 coats of color, followed by top coat, allowing to dry completely between each coat of paint)
  • Once nails are dry, apply hand lotion, and wah-laa!? Beautiful hands.

Dessert: Once everyone is done with facials and manicures, it?s time to serve dessert!? Be sure to include chocolate!

Gifts: End the party by giving everyone a gift to take home.? This is a perfect time to hand out bridesmaids gifts, and tell everyone how beautiful they look!? For my guests, we made homemade sugar scrubs with brown sugar, honey, and olive oil. We each made our own to keep in a recycled baby food jar. ?Find tons of great recipes for homemade scrubs from Erika Katz, Bonding Over Beauty. ?You could also put together a manicure kit in a mason jar for each guest, or buy extra mud masks or manicure kits for everyone.

Hosting an at-home spa party is a lot of fun and easy on the budget.? You can send invitations by mail, email, facebook, etc.? I think this works best with a small group of girls, but it can work for any size if you have enough space and supplies.

I really like this idea for the couple who is having a destination wedding without bridesmaids and groomsmen.? Before you leave for your amazing wedding destination, gather up your closest girl friends for some DIY pampering.? Do each other?s nails, soak your feet, and share some yummy cocktails and munchies while you gab.

Remember to take photos!? And, if you?d like to share your spa party photos, please let us know!? We?d love to see them.

Sprint buying some US Cellular markets for $480M

(AP) ? Sprint Nextel Corp. on Wednesday said it has agreed to buy U.S. Cellular Corp.'s service areas in the Midwest for $480 million to boost its network capacity in that region.

Sprint, the third-largest U.S. cellphone carrier, is buying spectrum and 585,000 customers in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri and Ohio. That's about 10 percent of U.S. Cellular's customer base and includes its key Chicago and St. Louis markets.

U.S. Cellular said 980 jobs will be lost with the sale. Sprint isn't taking over any employees. U.S. Cellular's headquarters will stay in Chicago. The company's remaining network spans states that include Wisconsin, Iowa, Oregon, Maine and North Carolina.

U.S. Cellular shares fell $4.28, or 11 percent, to $34.74 on the news, their lowest point since February 2010, amid a broad market decline.

Analyst Christopher King at Stifel Nicolaus said that while Sprint's offer seems fair, "we believe the spectrum in Chicago and St. Louis represented a portion of the most valuable assets that US Cellular had," and investors were banking on a better return for it. Finding a buyer for the rest of the company will be more difficult now, he said.

Sprint shares fell 7 cents to $5.66 in afternoon trading, as the major indexes fell 2 percent.

The acquisition should boost Overland Park, Kan.-based Sprint's data capacity and speeds in the Midwest. It doesn't have as much available spectrum, or space on the airwaves, as the larger carriers do for its new "4G LTE" network, which holds back its speeds.

Last month, Sprint struck a deal to sell 70 percent of itself to Japanese cellphone carrier Softbank Corp. for $20 billion. Though the deal hasn't closed yet, Softbank has lent Sprint money, giving the previously cash-strapped carrier freedom to pursue deals.

U.S. Cellular is the country's sixth-largest wireless carrier, with 5.8 million devices on its network. As wireless data speeds become more and more important to customers, smaller carriers like U.S. Cellular are finding it hard to compete against the biggest carriers, Verizon Wireless and AT&T, and it's been losing high-paying customers at a slow but steady rate for the last three years.

The acquisition is subject to regulatory approval, and is expected to close in the middle of next year.

Also on Wednesday, U.S. Cellular said its third-quarter net income dropped 43 percent, as the company subsidized sales of new smartphones.

U.S. Cellular earned $35.5 million, or 42 cents per share, down from $62.1 million, or 73 cents per share, in the same quarter last year. Revenue rose 3 percent to $1.14 billion.

The All-in-One: A Perfect Family Computer - Techlicious

posted by Suzanne Kantra on November 09, 2012 in Computers and Software, Computers & Accessories, Family and Parenting, Kids, Seniors, Guides & Reviews :: 0 comments

An all-in-one computer solves a number of problems in my house. First, it's easy to make sure it stays in the family room, so I can monitor the sites the kids are visiting; laptops have a way of disappearing into the kids' rooms. Second, they serve as a second information and entertainment center for everything from homework to games to movies.

With Microsoft's launch of its touch-friendly Windows 8 operating system last week, the all-in-one has become even more attractive as a family PC option. The home screen is now filled with live tiles that show information that's updated in real time, so anyone can see things like weather, calendar appointments and recent photos at a glance without needing to open the application ? a huge time-saver in the morning.

The touch interface is also easy for young kids to use, especially those like my four-year old son who has grown up on touchscreen devices. When I unboxed the HP Envy 20-d010t TouchSmart all-in-one I received for testing, he took to it immediately, spending hours playing Agent P Strikes Back, a Perry the Platypus game.

So if you're in the market for a new family computer, check out the recent crop of Windows 8 touchscreen all-in-ones. There are plenty of great all-in-one options to choose from. These are my picks.

Dell Inspiron One 23-inch TouchDell Inspiron One 23-inch Touch

It may be a bit bare bones when it comes to style, but the Dell Inspiron One 23-inch represents the best value for an all-in-one touchscreen model ($779.99 on dell.com). It comes with a 23-inch, Full HD, LED-backed touchscreen (1920 x 1080), an entry-level Intel Pentium G645 processor, Intel integrated graphics, 4GB of RAM and a 500GB hard drive. That's more than enough for word processing, watching videos, editing photos or any other everyday computing task. And if you need more power, the Inspiron One 23-inch is configurable up to a Intel Core i7-3770s, 8GB of RAM and a 1TB hard drive ($1,399.99). You can't configure it with a discreet graphics card, something that makes a difference when gaming or editing video.

HP Envy 20-d010t TouchSmartHP Envy 20-d010t TouchSmart

A step up from the Inspiron One 23" Touch, the HP Envy 20-d010t TouchSmart ($799.99 on hp.com) offers a more attractive design and a few higher-end options. The base model comes with a 20-inch, Full HD, LED-backed touchscreen (1920 x 1080), an Intel Pentium G40 processor, Intel integrated graphics, 2GB of RAM and a 500GB hard drive. For those looking to play games or edit video, you can opt into a Intel Core i3-3220 processor, 2GB NVIDIA GeForce GT 630M discreet graphics card, 8GB RAM, 16MB of SSD cache and a 2TB hard drive ($1,609.99).

Acer Aspire 5600UAcer Aspire 5600U

Representing a good mid-range value is Acer's 23-inch Aspire 5600U ($999.99 on us.acer.com). It comes loaded with an Intel Core i5-3210m processor, 6GB of RAM, a 1TB hard drive and Intel integrated graphics. The 23-inch Full HD LED-backed touchscreen (1920 x 1080) reclines up to 80 degrees for easy touchscreen control. Extras include NFC (near field communication) and Bluetooth 4 for easy connectivity to wireless speakers and smartphones.

Sony Vaio Tap 20Sony Vaio Tap 20

The Sony Vaio Tap 20 may be on the pricey side at $999.99 (on sony.com), but it's unique in that it has a built-in battery so you can use it for almost three hours without plugging it in. And its 20-inch touchscreen (1600 x 900) IPS LCD can fold flat for playing board games or watching videos on your lap. The base model comes with an Intel Core i5-3317u processor, Intel integrated graphics, 4GB of RAM and a 750GB hard drive.

Apple iMac 2012Apple iMac

Of course, Windows 8 isn't for everyone. Those looking for a computer running Apple's Mac OS X operating system are bound to be happy with the new line of iMac all-in-one computers. Apple has taken an already attractive design and made it exceptionally thin; it's now just 5mm deep at the edges. You can choose from a 21.5-inch Full HD LED-backed LCD (1920 x 1080) or 27-inch (2560 x 1440) IPS LCD display, though no touchscreen option. The base model ($1,299 on apple.com later this month) comes with an Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB of RAM, a 1TB hard drive and 512MB NVIDIA GeForce GT 640m graphics card, making it more expensive than similarly configured Windows 8 models.

Data usage on the big four: T-Mobile and AT&T up, Verizon and Sprint down

Data Usage Chart

A joint study by Fierce Wireless and NPD Connected Intelligence has been tracking data usage of Android (and now iOS) users across the big four carriers in the states. Shown above is the chart of the average data usage of the tracked users over the last 6 months. T-Mobile (after a short drop) and AT&T have both been trending upwards, while Verizon and Sprint (strikingly so) have been trending consistently downwards. Average usage in September was 1.09, 0.89, 0.57 and 0.68GB on T-Mobile, AT&T, Verizon and Sprint, respectively.

T-Mobile offering unlimited data is enough to explain the increase in usage, and AT&T has started to move to generally data-friendly shared plans as well. It's interesting to see Verizon data usage going down considering its expansive rollout of LTE, but let's also remember nearly all recent Verizon phones have software built-in to force help users choose Wifi more often. Sprint as of late is well-known for extremely slow 3G data speeds -- and the LTE network isn't really there yet -- so it's not surprising to see data usage trending downwards on the Now Network.
