How pets benefit retirement home seniors | The Pulse of Comfort ...

Bringing an old or new friend along with you is one of the best ways to adapt to a retirement home. By allowing pets, senior communities cultivate a loving, home-like environment in which you need not feel lonely. Plenty of senior homes will let you live with a pet without any additional charge. When asked who the most popular members of their community are, many residents mention pets first.

Chartwell Classic, Oakville

You, like Elveda Elznic, may only consider living in a retirement home that permits you to bring your beloved pet with you: ?When choosing a retirement community, I never looked at any other because my little Shi-Poo Jenny could live here with me. She loves the attention from the residents and staff, and enjoys playing with her poodle friend Tequi, who lives here too.?

Here are three keys ways that pets benefit retirement home seniors?

1. Easing the Transition

May Parry, the social supervisor at the Briton House, believes that pets are an important way to ease the transition from your own home to a retirement community. ?A pet is something familiar, part of home life and really part of your family,? she notes.

Jane Jones, the community relations manager of the Grenadier Retirement Residence, agrees. ?[Pets] are their family. Why should they move in and have to give them up? It isn?t fair.?

2. Dealing with Your Emotions

A recent study at Goldsmiths College in London found that dogs can show empathy. They have a strong sense about when someone, particularly their owners, is in distress and react accordingly. Other studies suggest that cats can also be empathetic.

Numerous pet owners find that a non-judgmental, unwavering companion is the most effect way to recover from any of life?s hardships.

Mildred exaplins, ?When my husband died, I had my cat, Wilbur. I cried a lot. But, when I was crying, Willy was always there. He just sat on my lap and looked into my eyes like he knew I was upset. I don?t know what I would have done without him. I never felt alone thanks to Wilbur.?

Wheeler simply appreciates Tequi?s friendship. ?Tequi is my constant companion. He sleeps at the foot of my bed every night.?

3. Forcing you to Exercise

In 2009, the Vanier Institute revealed that pet ownership can improve your health by forcing you to be active. Dogs especially require a lot of exercise. As Mary Wheeler quips, ?Right now, he [Tequi the dog] is sitting under the table wondering when I am going to take him for a walk.?

Simon adds, ?It?s very easy to just enjoy the nice amenities of a beautiful retirement home and sit around. My dog, Molly, has kept me from being lazy and got me outside. She needs to walk a lot and I have lost a good deal of weight just by taking her for good, long walks twice or even three times a day.?

Robert L. Gerry, 63, Fort Myers, Florida

ROBERT "Bob" L. GERRY, 63, passed away July 26, 2012
Bob is survived by his wife Karen, his mother, Harriette Cushman, sister, Ronnie Gerry, and brother-in-law Richard Schley. Karen and Bob have been residents of Fort Myers for more than 35 years. Bob was President of Risk management Insurance Inc.
The viewing is from 2:30 to 4:30pm on Monday, July 30, 2012 at the Harvey-Engelhardt Funeral Home at 1600 Colonial Blvd in Fort Myers. A Celebration of Bob's Life will follow from 5:00 to 7:00pm at The Landings Yacht, Golf and Tennis Club at 4425 S. Landings Drive in Fort Myers.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Suncoast Humane Society in Englewood, Florida or Joanne's House at Hope Hospice of Bonita Springs.

Robert Lloyd Gerry
Robert was born January 19, 1949 in Washington D.C. just in time to watch, in his mothers' arms, the inaugural of Harry Truman.
Bob grew up in Dallas, Texas where he engaged in many sports. He became a young businessman at age 11, when he purchased 4 shares of Boeing stock with money saved from his paper route.
When his father, Lloyd Gerry died, 16 year old Bob began to take charge of his own destiny: working, while at the same time completing his education. When his mother, Harriette, moved to Fort Myers, Florida, Bob followed and was richly rewarded when he found the love of his life, Karen Smith. They were married in 1979. Around that time, he took the opportunity to start his own business, Risk Management Insurance. While his business was very important to him, it did not limit his interest and curiosity in other areas.
He and Karen traveled frequently and left few places in the world unexplored while making many good friends in the process. Although Karen was his constant and enthusiastic companion, whether it was sailing, hiking, skiing, fly fishing, or reading, she quite prudently declined to accompany him when mountain climbing became his sport of choice.
Four years ago, Bob learned he had prostate cancer. He attacked this problem with the same energy and determination he displayed throughout his life. He pursued all available options for himself and became a passionate advocate of early screening for all men.
The family is immensely grateful to Joanne's House at Hope Hospice for their tender care of our precious son, brother and loving husband.

GE?s Latest Central Inverter Technology Clears Path for Utilities to Boost Solar Energy Production Worldwide

30 July 2012 GE?s Latest Central Inverter Technology Clears Path for Utilities to Boost Solar Energy Production Worldwide

?

  • GE?s ProSolar Inverter Allows BELECTRIC?s New Solar Station in Germany to Efficiently Convert and Deliver Renewable Electricity to Grid
  • ProSolar System Plays Key Role in 1st Solar Power Station Rated at 1,500 Volts

PARIS?July 30, 2012?Marking a new technology milestone in the global effort to increase renewable energy production by driving down overall system costs, GE (NYSE: GE) has deployed the first 1,500-VDC (volts, DC current) open circuit (OC) central inverter for utility scale solar power plants. The inverter will help reduce overall system costs, which is vital to making solar power a more economical alternative to fossil fuel technologies.

Central inverters are key components of photovoltaic (PV) plants. The technology converts DC power produced by solar panels to AC power, which is then fed into the main grid.

GE Energy?s Power Conversion business developed, built and delivered its 1,500-VDC ProSolar central inverter technology to solar power plant system integrator BELECTRIC, the global market leader in terms of installed power. BELECTRIC installed GE?s advanced central inverter at its new solar power plant in southern Germany, utilizing PADCON?s 1500 VDC System Technology.

?GE?s ProSolar central inverter system is designed to help efficiently stabilize the power grid with defined active and reactive power around the clock. This is extremely important when it comes to countering the intermittent availability of solar energy,? said Bernhard Beck, CEO of BELECTRIC.

The 1,500-VDC OC central inverter for BELECTRIC is designed as an outdoor version and offers a number of key benefits. Most notably, it allows operation at high DC voltages on panel level with lower DC currents while increasing the rated power for inverters. This can result in significantly lower costs for the technical DC infrastructure as well as the overall balance of system costs. Since the power of the inverter system is limited mainly by the current, the power can be substantially increased by increasing the operating voltage, and this means additional cost savings.

Due to higher operating DC voltage and higher output with the same size as conventional ProSolar 1,000-VDC OC inverter units, the 1,500-VDC OC solution offers higher power density with the same small footprint that means optimized and flexible site layout. The liquid-cooled and improved power electronic topology ensures high efficiency, especially in partial load operations and is developed in Berlin.

GE Energy?s inverter technology has a long track record of extremely high reliability resulting from the company?s experience in the development of frequency converters for the wind energy, oil and gas as well as metals sectors and other industrial applications.

?Our inverter rated at 1,500 volts is an important breakthrough in efforts to achieve grid parity with photovoltaic systems in certain countries. GE offers customers with technology options to support renewable energy policies and push projects that build long-term energy security using solar energy,? said Georg M?hlenkamp, global product leadership manager for GE Energy Management?s Power Conversion business. ?Reducing the costs of solar electricity generation through continuous innovation forms the basis for GE Energy?s long-term technology development strategy.?

By offering its solar inverter technology as part of its broad portfolio of products and solutions, GE Energy is supporting ongoing energy policy changes in Germany, which plans to increase the share of renewable energies to 35 percent of total power demand by the year 2020. By deploying the ProSolar central solar inverter to help reduce the costs of solar power generation, PV projects will become an increasingly economical alternative to fossil fuel technologies.

GE Energy acquired Power Conversion (then known as Converteam) in September 2011. GE Energy?s Power Conversion business applies the science and systems of power conversion to help drive the electric transformation of the world?s energy infrastructure. Designing and delivering advanced motor, drive and control technologies that evolve today?s industrial processes for a cleaner, more productive future. McInerney lifts Union over Revolution

CHESTER, Pa. -

Jack McInerney scored in the 90th minute to give the Philadelphia Union a 2-1 victory over the New England Revolution on Sunday night.

Sheanon Williams sent a clean cross into the box and McInerney finished with a header for the come-from-behind win.

Freddy Adu also scored for the Union (7-10-2), who have won four of their last five games.

Saer Sene gave the Revolution (6-10-5) a 1-0 lead with a 25-yard strike in the 12th minute. It was Sene's team-high ninth goal of the season.

That lead held up until McInerney was taken down in the box and Adu responded with a penalty kick in the 59th minute.

New England dropped to 1-8-2 on the road.

Philadelphia improved to 5-4-1 at home and won its fourth in a row here.

WiFi VOIP Phones - Making Communications Easier | Gesankart

WiFi VOIP Phones - Making Communications Easier : Until recent times, one was able to make free calls to any part of the world over the Internet using Voice Over Internet Protocol. With the advent of wireless VOIP phones, one no longer has to be connected to a computer in order to do this.

How do WiFi phones work?

Using the same technology that computers use to connect to a wireless network, today there are wireless IP phones that do the same thing and can be carried around, like a GSM cell phone. While both use radio wave frequencies to send and receive signals, normal cell phones transmit over a 824-MHz to 894-MHz frequency, while Wifi phones transmit over a 2.4 - 5 GHz frequency. To use a Wifi phone you can dial an ID name (if calling another VOIP phone) or a number (if calling any other phone). The phone transmits the number in the form of data packets to the wireless router. The data is then transferred via the Internet to a call processor which connects to the other VOIP phones, a cell phone network or a PST network.

Popular VOIP Wifi Phones

Some wireless VOIP phones are made for a particular WiFi network. For example, Netgear WiFi phones are made for Skype while UTStarcom phones are used for Vonage. Other wireless IP phones work with a particular protocol, as opposed to a particular network, usually the SIP or Session Initiation Protocol. Some of the most popular WiFi phones include Linksys WIP300, NetGear SPH101, Cisco 7920 and ZyXEL Prestige 2000W.

Scope of WiFi Phones

WiFi phones and WiFi video phones offer a cheap way to communicate on the go and share visuals, as long as one is in the region of a wireless network. Students living on a wireless campus for example might find it economical to use such a device. Several businesses, would also find this technology useful, especially where constant communication is required between people who do not sit at a desk, for example on a cruise ship, an oil rig, a resort etc.

Telecom Business Services Inc. introduced their Wifi Video Phones. This Dual Wi-Fi Cell (GSM) Handsets is a truly mobile, standards compliant, video conferencing solutions, combining cell phone technology. Telecom Business Services Inc converts your voice into digital packets that are sent over the internet. Rupee 1 per minute for calls to US, UK, Canada and 40 other countries, Call World Wide at most economical rates.

Look For Customer Service In Truck ... - The Roofing Company Guide

When you operate a enterprise that deals with a fleet or possibly a few industrial trucks, you?ll need a reliable vendor to provide truck accessories. As with any business relationship, you need to be able to rely on your partners to provide high-end client service. If you rely on your vehicles to run your business, you can not afford to have them out of service. That means that the supplier of Denver truck accessories which you purchase from ought to have a sizable inventory so your gear is on hand if you contact them.

Yet another aspect of the customer support is their ability to develop, fabricate and professionally install the accessories you?ll need promptly. This needs industrial knowledge which will help you get your trucks back on the road to operate for you.

Make sure that all your commercial equipment which include Denver truck toppers, snow plows, winches and lift gates are warrantied. This can indicate that they?re durable because they stand behind their goods.

Google Seeks to Dismiss Class Action eBook Lawsuit

When Google decided to scan 15 million orphaned eBooks and many classical works seven years ago, the last thing they envisioned was a monumental class action lawsuit. Recently a judge hearing the class refused a proposed $125 million dollar settlement and Google retorted last week that the case should be simply dropped.

Google has claimed that their book scanning technologies have not hindered authors bottom line. They have challenged any of the authors or their estates to prove that they have lost sales. The company furthermore said that their digitization techniques, if anything, has brought accelerated sales, due to the books being heavily indexed in Google Search.

The courts now have asked the Authors Guild to file a response by August 24th 2012. The judge overseeing the case also said that this lawsuit affects comic book and graphic novel artists. I doubt they would enter into the lawsuit at this juncture, but stranger things have happened.

87% The Dark Knight Rises

All Critics (266) | Top Critics (43) | Fresh (231) | Rotten (35)

There was an opportunity here for Nolan to show us another way, to (again) stretch the boundaries of what is possible in a superhero film. Instead, alas, the latter half of The Dark Knight Rises retreats toward conventionality.

I'm not arguing that Rises should be Singin' in the Rain. But its Wagnerian ambitions are not matched by its material. It hasn't earned its darkness.

The biggest surprise may just be how satisfying Nolan has made his farewell to a Dark Knight trilogy that many fans will wish he'd extend to a 10-part series, at least.

Others will see it differently, but for me this is a disappointingly clunky and bombastic conclusion to a superior series -- Nolan's biggest and worst movie to date.

The director and cowriter/brother Jonathan Nolan pay heed to Wayne's wounded emotional arc. And the film is a feat of painstakingly crafted closure.

TDKR completes on the great trilogies in movie history.

... Nolan thinks small in a big way... providing an imperfect yet satisfying conclusion, and that in itself is quite an accomplishment.

Christopher Nolan's Batman saga comes to an end with this engrossing and absolutely spellbinding installment...

The weakest of Nolan's three Batmans with offputting politics and a dull villain but its fascinatingly vertical construction and Catwoman save it.

Rises a Satisfying Conclusion to Nolan's Trilogy.

It gets away from the great Christopher Nolan for a time during the film's soft middle, but he brings the conclusion to his Batman trilogy home with a bang.

All in all, the gifted (writer-director Christopher) Nolan's latest epic is typically well-constructed (despite a plot hole here and there) and beautiful to look at.

Enjoying TDKR requires messiah-like trust in Nolan that he'll eventually reward us, as long as we don't get too hung up on all the plot holes and leftover genre tropes.

A bit of a letdown, containing nothing close to the brilliance of the late Heath Ledger's performance in the previous film, but it doesn't glorify nihilism, chaos and anarchy like the previous film did because it's villains aren't charismatic.

The summer's most grandiose, grown-up, operatic superhero movie, one that makes others look, in comparison, like kids playing around in action-figure pajamas.

A fantastic conclusion even if a bit bloated.

Demonstra que um longa baseado em super-her?is pode ser adulto, investir no realismo e representar um passatempo escapista sem, com isso, desrespeitar a intelig?ncia de seu p?blico.

Nolan's final Batman film delivers grand excitement, grounded performances and the kind of conservative themes rarely embraced in blockbuster films.

Complex and comprehensive, beautiful if bloated, is nonetheless superlative filmmaking and even though over 160 minutes manages to rivet the senses in every frame.

The Bane voice drove me crazy, but I still liked it.

In his last adventure under Christopher Nolan's guidance, the Dark Knight never quite rises to the occasion.

If Nolan has accomplished nothing else here, he has made one of the more human movies of this type.

A joyless, bitter epic without a hint of exhilaration.

Ties up all the loose ends and gives a proper sendoff to Nolan's "Batman" trilogy.

The belief that one man can become a symbol for something greater will continue to drive people to this trilogy for years to come.

Once Batman finally gets back to action, with the audience's dander by that time primed to the max, the film explodes in scene after dazzling scene of air to street attacks and counter attacks.

3Sixty.3 vs DQL-8 vs MS-8 - DIYMA Car Audio Forum

I have no experience with the AudioControl stuff but as far as the 3Sixty VS MS8 goes, I think it boils down to weather or not you're a tweaker.

The MS8 does a great job all on it's own but leaves you wondering if you could do any better if you had some more control over it. You do have tone controls, sub level controls(which also effect the mids) and a 31 band system EQ. The interface is really simple and feels lackluster...but, the unit itself still does what it's supposed to and does sound good. It's very much a set it and forget it type of unit. It does not require the end user to be very good at tuning at all as it does everything for you. The only things you could really screw up here would be to choose incorrect crossover settings or incorrectly label the outputs during setup. The whole setup process takes just a few minutes. Another possible advantage of the MS8 is the built in amplifier. Although it's a bit low in power, it can be used to drive a center channel, tweeters or maybe the rear fill...just remember that you can't use both all of the 8 line level channels and the amplifier channels at the same time, it's one or the other or a combination of both but wil an 8 channel limit.

If you're the type who loves to see every control in front of you and wants to turn knobs to see what everything does than the 3Sixty would be the way to go. It's interface is very nice but requires a PC laptop or a palm type of device for setup. I think the main advantage of the 3Sixty.3 for people interfacing with factory sound systems is the dual volume knobs. It allows you to leave the factory head unit at a fixed voulme(effectively bypassing whatever eq roll off is implemented in the factory system as volume goes up and down) setting and using the 3Sixty to control volume and at the same time have direct access to the sub volume on the second knob. Everything on the 3Sixty is manual input so it's a tweakers delight and the results are directly related to your knowledge/skills/ears. You could potentially spend hours out in your car playing with everything if you're the type to like doing that.

Remember that bot of these are 8ch units, and if you plan on going active with all of the speakers you mention in your post you'll end up with 11 channels and if you decide to go with a center than that's 12. This means you'll either have to go part active and part passive or implement some active crossovers in whatever amps you're using.

Ciriaco triple leads Red Sox over Yankees 8-6

NEW YORK (AP) ? Curtis Granderson misplayed Pedro Ciriaco's ninth-inning flyball into a go-ahead triple, and the Boston Red Sox beat the New York Yankees 8-6 Saturday night after Mark Teixeira had tied the score with a two-run homer off nemesis Vicente Padilla.

Down 6-1, the Yankees closed in the fifth on Jayson Nix's two-run homer off Jon Lester and Derek Jeter's RBI grounder.

After Teixeira's homer in the eighth, Rafael Soriano (2-1) walked Jacoby Ellsbury with one out in the ninth and Ciriaco hit a fly that could have been caught. Granderson broke in, then went back and turned the wrong way before the ball dropped to his right-field side as he fell. Dustin Pedroia followed with a sacrifice fly.

Andrew Miller (3-1) got one out for the win, just the second for Boston in eight games against the Yankees this year. Alfredo Aceves finished for his 22nd save in 26 chances.

Padilla and Teixeira have been going at each other in recent weeks. Padilla allowed a leadoff single to pinch-hitter Raul Ibanez in the eighth, then threw a called third strike past Derek Jeter. Granderson hit two foul drives deep down the right-field line, the second missing a home run by about a foot, before striking out.

Padilla fell behind 2-0 in the count to Teixeira, then lobbed in a 51 mph curveball. Teixeira turned on the next pitch, sending it deep into the right-field bleachers. He stared at the ball as he took four short steps up the line, then went into his home run trot.

Teixeira hit a go-ahead, two-run triple off Padilla in the seventh inning at Fenway Park on July 6, sparking a weekend war of words. Padilla accused Teixeira of wronging Latino teammates when they played together on the Texas Rangers, and Teixeira said Padilla "didn't have a lot of friends in the game." Padilla responded Teixeira would "be better off playing a women's sport."

Boston manager Bobby Valentine caused a stir began the game when he said the Red Sox medical staff instructed him not to play Carl Crawford four days in a row, a mandate Valentine said he ignored earlier in the month after the left fielder came off the disabled list.

Following a rain delay of 2 hours, 4 minutes, the Red Sox had built their lead when Adrian Gonzalez hit an RBI double and scored on Will Middlebrook's two-run double in the first, then hit a three-run homer off CC Sabathia in the fifth.

Chris Stewart's first home run since September cut the gap to 3-1 in the third, but Gonzalez boosted the lead with two outs in the fifth when he lined a home run into the right-field bleachers. Gonzalez leads the majors in batting average with runners in scoring position at .418 (41 for 98).

New Yankees right fielder Ichiro Suzuki raced into the right-center gap to rob Gonzalez of an extra-base hit with a catch just in front of the warning track in the seventh.

Lester, who had been 0-3 with a 10.42 in his previous four starts, allowed four runs and four hits in six innings with six strikeouts. He fanned Robinson Cano in the sixth for his 1,000th strikeout.

Sabathia allowed a season-high six runs and eight hits in six innings. He retired 12 of 13 batters following Middlebrooks' double, then gave up Ciriaco's single and a walk on a close full-count pitch to Pedroia before Gonzalez's home run.

NOTES: Former Red Sox manager Terry Francona visited with Boston players before the game in the Red Sox clubhouse, preparing for his job as a broadcaster for Sunday night's game on ESPN. ... The Yankees have outscored the Red Sox 18-12 in the first inning this year. ... Stewart, who has turned into Sabathia's regular catcher, had gone homerless in 105 at-bats since connecting for San Francisco off the Los Angeles Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw

Golan Druse start to turn against Syria's Assad

BUKATA, Golan Heights (AP) ? The raging civil war just across the cease-fire line in Syria is posing an uncomfortable political choice for the Druse people in the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights.

Do they maintain their traditional loyalty to the government of Bashar Assad, whose family has vowed to take back the territory? Or should they support the burgeoning Arab revolt against Assad's harsh rule?

In the shifting sands of the Middle East, the Druse again find themselves a people caught in the middle.

In Druse villages close enough to hear the fighting, families and friends are divided between backers of the revolt and supporters of the regime. A Druse doctor predicted his people would demand Assad's downfall, while a butcher in a nearby town denounced the Syrian uprising as a foreign conspiracy.

Israel captured the Golan from Syria in the 1967 Mideast war. In 1981 it annexed the strategic plateau, 65 kilometers (40 miles) long and 20 kilometers (12 miles) wide, because militarily, it commands Israel's north. The international community has not recognized the Israeli annexation. In negotiations, Israel has offered to exchange the territory for full peace, but talks broke down a decade ago over exact borders and other issues.

The Druse residents of the Golan Heights were offered Israeli citizenship, but only a few accepted. Many assumed that someday the territory would revert to Syria, by peace or by war, and those who identified with Israel might be treated as traitors. Most Druse identified as Syrians and the older generation in particular found the offer of Israeli citizenship an affront.

The Druse ? there are 20,000 in the Golan Heights ? follow a secretive offshoot of Islam whose adherents live primarily in Syria, Israel, Lebanon and Jordan. Over the centuries, they have tried to keep to themselves, offering allegiance to whoever was in control of their territory.

The four main Golan Druse villages are near the cease-fire line with Syria. In the early weeks of the uprising against Assad last year, only a tiny minority of Golan's Druse would publicly support the rebels. Now those voices are getting stronger.

"Most of the people here cannot distinguish between Assad and their homeland. They are looking to him as the face of the homeland and waiting for him to liberate us from the (Israeli) occupation," said Ali Abu Awad, a doctor in the village of Bukata. "But these days, when they can see what Assad is doing there, the big lie has started to fall. I think they will demand the fall of Assad."

Over the past week, he said most people in Bukata have climbed nearby hills to watch the fighting nearby.

"It's a different feeling to see with your eyes. You feel very useless, very empty, to see this army demolishing the civilian population," Abu Awad said.

In nearby Majdal Shams, Assad supporters spoke out.

Hasan Fakhr Deen, a butcher, called the Syria conflict "a conspiracy of outside states."

He insisted that Syrians remained united and felt the nearby shelling and smoke across the border were legitimate attacks against "people who want to change the regime in Syria."

Besides its strategic importance, the Golan Heights are also a major source of water and recreation. Israelis flock there for hikes, an Israeli winery and the country's only ski resort.

The Druse are a part of that landscape, and Israeli tourists as well as soldiers frequent their restaurants.

Still, the Druse stay in touch with their Syria relatives and are sometimes allowed to cross for weddings, university studies and religious pilgrimages. Golan-grown apples are also annually transferred over land to Syria to help Druse farmers market their crop. Golan Druse who marry Syrian nationals automatically lose their right to live in the Golan, tearing families apart.

The bloody crackdown in Syria has led the Golan Druse to begin speaking more freely.

Mahmoud Amasha, a Bukata apple farmer and insurance agent, said he was "convinced that the number of people opposing this regime grows every day."

But he said divisions over Assad's popularity in Bukata have "cast a shadow over the people in this town."

Syria's Sunni majority makes up the backbone of the opposition, and minorities such as the Druse and Christians fear they will be marginalized ? or even targeted ? if Sunnis take over.

Assad and the ruling elite also belong to a minority sect, the Alawites, a Shiite offshoot. Assad's regime always pushed a secular ideology, which was seen as giving minorities a measure of protection.

Residents say demonstrations break out every few weeks, some in favor of the regime and some against. The divisions have even pitted family against family and friend against friend.

Three teenage girls walking through Bukata's central square held differing views, with two supporting Assad and one opposing him.

Ruba Amasha, 17, said the three have remained friends, but that is not always the case.

"For instance, a pro-Assad person will say 'hi' to a friend on the street, and if the other person's against (Assad), they'll just keep walking," she said.

Alaa Alwely, a driver, said the Syrian civil war would likely delay any chance of the Golan returning to Syria. Given what was happening across the border, he said he was fine with that.

"I've lived a respectful life here," he said. "I was born under occupation. I'm not sure if Syrian rule would be better or not."

Buildings Then and Now: 600 N. Broad St. | Philadelphia Real ...

600 North Broad Street todayActually, this is not the story of just one building. It?s the story of changing fashions, fortunes and uses.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, developers and impresarios sought to promote the area north of Spring Garden Street and west of Broad Street as a fashionable district for newly wealthy Philadelphians. A number of grand structures went up along this stretch of North Broad Street, most notably Oscar Hammerstein?s Metropolitan Opera House (1908) three blocks north of this site. The grand structure that occupied this site was the second home of Central High School, the oldest public high school in the city and still one of its best today. It?s on the left in this 1913 photo of the intersection of Broad and Green streets:

Broad and Green streets, 1913By the time Central High School moved to its current site in West Oak Lane in 1936, North Broad Street had become Automobile Row ? home to most of the city?s car dealers and garages. We don?t know when the building that housed Wilkie Buick in its later years was erected, nor when the dealership went out of business, but here?s what it looked like after the dealership had closed:

Wilkie Buick in the 1970sAfter the dealership closed, the building sat vacant for several years until the fall of 2010, when developer Michael O?Neill (now a sand magnate) put together a deal for a mixed-use project that involved two of Philadelphia?s best-known restaurateurs and a local caterer.

The restaurateurs are Stephen Starr and Marc Vetri, and the caterer is Joe Volpe. In the photo at the top of this article, Volpe?s Cescaphe Event Group operates Vie, the banquet hall at left, and Starr?s Route 6, a seafood restaurant named for the main highway on Cape Cod, is at the far right. Around the corner from Route 6 on Mt. Vernon Street is Alla Spina, Vetri?s Italian gastropub, with 20 different beers on tap. (Vetri is no stranger to this neighborhood, having opened Osteria up the street at 640 North Broad several years ago.)

The development also includes a 98-unit apartment building at 15th and Mt. Vernon streets. You could say that this project marks North Broad Street?s return to fashionability. Well, almost: just down the block on the other side of Broad is one last reminder of the street?s days as an automotive hub.

Twitter bomb joke conviction overturned

11 hrs.

A British man who joked on Twitter that he would blow up an airport after it closed because of snow has had his conviction for sending a "menacing" message overturned in a landmark ruling for users of social media websites.

Paul Chambers, 28, had sent the message in what he called a moment of frustration at not being able to catch a flight from Doncaster Robin Hood airport.

He had later been arrested and sentenced but the High Court on Friday upheld his appeal against conviction.

Speaking outside the court afterwards, Chambers' lawyer John Cooper, who had argued it was wrong to associate the tweet with terrorism, said it was a milestone ruling.

"It's a very big decision both nationally and internationally for hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people who use Facebook and Twitter," he told the BBC.

"It means that if you intend to make a joke and if what you do is a joke, however bad a joke that is, you cannot be prosecuted," he added.

The case revolved around a tweet sent by Chambers to a friend in January 2010, which read: "Crap! Robin Hood Airport is closed. You've got a week and a bit to get your shit together, otherwise I'm blowing the airport sky high!"

Chambers said he sent the tweet to his 600 followers in a moment of frustration and never imagined it would be taken seriously.

"It was surreal. My world became something else," he said when asked how he felt when he was arrested.

Of Friday's ruling he added: "It's an important decision as far as social networks are concerned and as far as Twitter is concerned.

"It has established that there has to be an action that is menacing and is intended to be menacing."

Chambers' case gained the attention and support of thousands of Twitter users and several high-profile British comedians.

In Friday's High Court ruling, three judges headed by the Lord Chief Justice Lord Judge, allowed Chambers' appeal against a Crown Court judge's decision upholding the 2010 conviction.

They said: "If the person or persons who receive or read it, (the message) or may reasonably be expected to receive, or read it, would brush it aside as a silly joke, or a joke in bad taste, or empty bombastic or ridiculous banter, then it would be a contradiction in terms to describe it as a message of a menacing character."

Kaine, Allen speak to farm group | WSLS 10

Kaine, a Democrat, said he?d like to reform the estate tax to help farm families keep their land. Allen, a Republican, said he wanted to get rid of the tax.

The two candidates differed on health care, environmental issues and other topics as they spoke separately in a forum sponsored by the Virginia Farm Bureau, an agribusiness council and two forest-product associations. More than 100 attended.

On the estate tax, which sparked several questions from the audience, Allen and Kaine took similar positions.

Allen said, ?Let?s give the death penalty to the death tax,? adding a quote he made up paraphrasing Patrick Henry, ?there should be no taxation without respiration.?

Kaine reminded the audience that during his term as governor,?Virginia eliminated its estate tax.

The Democrat took a more nuanced approach on the federal version of the tax, saying he ?would be very open to reforms that enable farm land to stay in families? so it can produce crops and food.

Kaine also said he wouldn?t eliminate the estate tax ?for people who are worth $50 or $60 or $70 million.?

Allen drew applause when he said he wants to be the 51st vote in the Senate to repeal the Affordable Care Act upheld by the Supreme Court in June.

Kaine said ?I would absolutely not repeal? the health-care reform, because it?s already covering preventive health care and drug benefits for seniors, while allowing young adults to get health insurance on their parents? plans.

But, Kaine said, he?d like to improve the plan by making payments to doctors based on outcomes rather than medical procedures. ?The plan, he said, needs to allow the government to negotiate with pharmaceutical companies on the prices of Medicare drugs.

Allen took a swing at the Environmental Protection Agency, saying its anti-coal policies are costing jobs and driving up the price of fertilizer and other chemicals.

?It?s my general view that we really need to unleash our American energy resources? to create jobs, reduce electric rates and increase revenue without raising taxes, Allen said.

His first act as a senator, Allen said, would introduce a bill to drill for oil and gas off Virginia?s coast. The crowd applauded the promise.

Kaine said he learned as governor it?s best to strike a balance on environmental issues, and he set aside $50 million to help farmers curb runoff from their lands into streams and the Chesapeake Bay.

The bay?s blue crab population was being over-harvested, Kaine said, and a three-year moratorium he placed on harvesting resulted in a now-thriving crab population.? Kaine said a few watermen have since told him they?re glad he imposed the moratorium, though they didn?t like it at the time.

?I do accept the science that says human activity is affecting the climate in a significant way,? Kaine said, adding some measures are needed to protect ?the God-given bounty that we count on.??

NASA's Curiosity rover to explore bizarre Martian mountain (+video)

The three-mile-tall Mount Sharp is an inviting target for investigation by NASA's one-ton Mars rover, which is scheduled to touch down on the Red Planet on Aug. 5.

The towering mountain that NASA's next Mars rover will explore after landing on the Red Planet next month remains mysterious to scientists, who say there's nothing quite like it here on Earth.

Mount Sharp rises 3 miles (5 kilometers) from the center of Mars' huge Gale Crater, where the car-size?Curiosity rover?will touch down on the night of Aug. 5. Curiosity scientists are eager to study the mountain, whose many layers preserve a record of the Red Planet's changing environmental conditions going back perhaps a billion years or more.

Curiosity's rovings could also help the team understand how?Mount Sharp?formed, because they're not entirely sure.

"In one go, you have flat-lying strata that are 5 kilometers thick. There's nothing like that on Earth," said Curiosity lead scientist John Grotzinger, of Caltech in Pasadena. "We don't really know what's going on there." [Curiosity - The SUV of Mars Rovers]

Exploring Mount Sharp

The 1-ton Curiosity rover is the centerpiece of NASA's $2.5 billion Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) mission, which launched in late November. MSL's main goal is to determine if the?Gale Crater?area is, or ever was, capable of supporting microbial life.

To get at this question, Curiosity will investigate the different layers of Mount Sharp, which is taller than any peak in the continental United States.

Life as we know it depends on liquid water. So the rover will probably spend a lot of time poking around Mount Sharp's lower reaches, where?Mars-orbiting spacecraft have spotted signs of minerals that form in the presence of water, such as clays and sulfates.

But there are reasons to climb higher. If Curiosity gets about 2,300 feet (700 meters) up the mountain, for example, it will cross a boundary, encountering layers that don't show signs of hydrated minerals. Higher still are strata that appear to have been deposited by the wind in a rhythmic pattern, perhaps indicating climate cycles, Grotzinger said.

Studying these higher layers could help scientists better understand why Mars shifted from a relatively wet world billions of years ago to the dry and desolate planet we know today ? a transition marked by what Grotzinger dubbed the "Great Desiccation Event."

PFT: Suh sued by woman after December crash

Steve Gleason. Drew Brees, Will SmithAP

They?re unveiling a statue of Steve Gleason outside the Superdome today.

But the subject of the artwork has been doing anything but standing still.

Gleason, who is battling ALS, continues to fight for a life of adventure for himself and others, even as the disease robs him of his ability to move.

New Orleans Times-Picayune columnist Jeff Duncan has an emotional update on Gleason?s fight on the day the ?Rebirth? statue of his 2006 blocked punt is unveiled.

The disease keeps the former Saints safety confined to a wheelchair now, and speaking has become difficult.

But he recently rode in a sidecar during a motorcycle rally and canoed down the Missouri River, following the route of Lewis and Clark.

?Our guides couldn?t believe it,? said Clare Durrett, marketing director for Team Gleason who accompanied him on the trip. ?To see his resilience and his willingness to do everything he physically could do without hesitation was incredible. . . . There were tears on the canoe, and we popped open some champagne for the floaters.?

His Team Gleason foundation?s also trying to help other ALS patients enjoy similar experiences. They?ve sent ALS patients scooters to stay mobile, another went on a trip to Italy which included whitewater rafting and a hot-air balloon ride.

?We really try to focus on those ALS patients who are trying to live by Steve?s example, who are still trying to live life to the fullest and are not giving up and trying to be productive, even though they have this diagnosis,? his wife Michel said.

But as much as his life stands as a testament, the statue of his famous blocked punt against the Falcons represents more.

?To have a statue of you up 100 years from now at the Superdome, I think that?s amazing,? Gleason said. ?But I don?t want this to be about me and that play. I want it to be about what that play symbolized, which was a commitment by this community to rebuild.

?This statue is about coming through adversity. It?s about finding your heroes. It?s about commitment and a rebirth for all.?

These have been troubled times for the Saints franchise, but Gleason?s bravery through a real struggle has been remarkable, and moving to those who live far beyond New Orleans.

Christians persecuted by Muslims | Reporting on the Middle East ...

?

U.S.-backed rebels are committing Christian genocide in Syria, where they are sacking churches and issuing threats that all Christians will be cleansed from rebel-held territory. A mass exodus of thousands of Christians is taking place, even as mainstream Western reporters like Robert Fisk demonize those same Christians for being supportive of the secular regime.

The bloody jihad waged against Nigeria?s Christians, which has seen hundreds killed this year alone, now includes plans to kill Christians with poisoned food, as part of the Islamic organization Boko Haram?s stated goal of purging Nigeria of all Christian presence.

During Egypt?s presidential elections, Al Ahram reported that "the Muslim Brotherhood blockaded entire streets, prevented Copts from voting at gunpoint, and threatened Christian families not to let their children go out and vote" for the secular candidate.

Meanwhile, under President Obama, the U.S. State Department, in an unprecedented move, purged the sections dealing with religious persecution from its recently released Country Reports on Human Rights. Likewise, the Obama administration insists that the Nigerian crisis has nothing to do with religion, even as Obama offered his hearty blessings to Egypt?s Muslim Brotherhood president, in the midst of allegations of electoral fraud.

Categorized by theme, June?s assemblage of Muslim persecution of Christians around the world includes (but is not limited to) the following accounts, listed in alphabetical order by country, not severity.

Church Attacks

Egypt: Because many visitors were in attendance, Muslims surrounded a Coptic church during Divine Liturgy "demanding that the visiting Copts leave the church before the completion of prayers, and threatening to burn down the church if their demand was not met." The priest contacted police asking for aid only to be told to comply with their demands, "and do not let buses with visitors to come to the church anymore." Christian worshippers exited halfway through liturgy to jeers outside. As they drove away, Muslims hurled stones at their buses. Also, repairs to a Coptic church that was torched and gutted a year ago by rioting Muslims were woefully inadequate, leaving the congregation with a staggering debt from further necessary repairs.

Indonesia: A Muslim mob of 300 wrecked a store that was being used for a Sunday church service on the pretext that it had not obtained "permission to hold Mass." The mob wrecked the first floor of the store, breaking windows and damaging furniture. Police stopped them before reaching the third floor, where some 60 Christians had congregated. None of the Muslims were arrested, although 12 Christians were taken into custody for questioning. Separately, in compliance to calls by Islamic clerics, authorities ordered 20 churches to be torn down, following the closure of 16 smaller Christian places of worship in the same district last month. The congregations continue to hold services inside their sealed-off buildings as other members stand guard outside.

Iran: Authorities ordered the closure of yet another church in the capital, Tehran, "amid a government campaign to crack down on the few recognized churches offering Farsi-speaking services," according to a human rights group. The church originally served Assyrian background Christian members; however, "due to an increasing number of Farsi-speaking believers?mostly MBBs [Muslim Background Believers]?it [the church] has become a cause of concern for the authorities and they now ordered it to shut down."

Kashmir: A 119-year-old church was torched by Muslims. The local bishop "said that the Muslim fundamentalists want Christians to leave the state? He said that the church had filed a case with the police but had been advised not to ?play up? such incidents." Christian minorities "are coming under growing threat from Kashmir?s Muslim majority. A Christian human rights group in India said that over 400 Christians have been displaced as a result."

Kazakhstan: Land use regulations are being exploited "as a means to prevent religious communities and their members exercising freedom of religion or belief." Most recently, authorities "forced a Methodist church to ?voluntarily? close and fined the wife of the Church?s Pastor, who further paid for an announcement in newspapers saying the church was ?liquidating itself,?" simply because "We do not want more punishment from the authorities."

Nigeria: Islamic militants attacked several churches during every Sunday of the month with bombs and guns killing dozens of Christian worshippers, and critically wounding hundreds, including many children. Growing numbers of Christians "dare not" attend church services anymore, even as reports suggest that some police are intentionally abandoning their watch prior to such attacks.

Sudan: Authorities bulldozed two church buildings to the ground and confiscated three Catholic schools, as a response to the secession of South Sudan in July 2011, saying that such buildings are associated with now unwelcome, largely Christian South Sudanese in the Islamic-ruled country. Another church building belonging to the Full Gospel Church was destroyed in the same area two months ago, also on the claim that it belonged to South Sudanese.

Turkmenistan: An Evangelical church in the Muslim-majority nation was raided by authorities: "All adult believers at the meeting were questioned about their faith and all of their Christian literature was confiscated." Their literature was returned two weeks later.

Apostasy, Blasphemy, Proselytism

Egypt: A Christian student handing out Christian literature in Assuit University "raised the ire of Muslim students," resulting in clashes on campus, "amid shouts of sectarian chants," leading to many injuries. Likewise, a Salafi leader declared on Egyptian TV that Muslims have no right "to convert to Christianity."

Iran: Five months after five Christian converts were arrested, their condition and fate remain unknown. They are accused of "attending house church services, promoting Christianity, propagating against the regime and disturbing national security." Being imprisoned for 130 days without word "is an obvious example of physical and mental abuse of the detainees?. one of the prison guards openly told one of these Christian detainees that all these pressures and uncertainties are intended to make them flee the country after they are released." Also, a young Iranian woman, who recently converted to Christianity and was an outspoken activist against the Islamic regime, was found dead, slumped over her car?s steering wheel, with a single gunshot wound to her head.

Pakistan: A banned Islamic group filed a blasphemy case against a 25-year-old mentally retarded Christian man. Muslims had converted him to Islam two years earlier, to use him as a pretext to annex his Christian village. In the words of a witness: "These people (Muslims) do not let us live. We are poor but are working hard to survive. On the night of the incidence a mob of Muslim clerics gathered [around] our colony to burn us all because of the blasphemy Ramzan [the retarded man] committed. Everyone was very scared. We all have small children in our houses and we didn?t know what to do. The mob surrounded our colony and raised a slogan to burn all the houses, they had torches in their hands and petrol in the cans. We called police and thank God police arrived just in time.

Saudi Arabia: Thirty-five Ethiopian Christians arrested in December for praying in a private home remain jailed, even as Saudi officials offer contradicting reasons for their arrest. Meanwhile, they have been beaten and subjected to interrogations and strip searches. Saudi Arabia formally bans all religions other than Islam. However, in 2006, Saudi authorities told the United States that they would "guarantee and protect the right to private worship for all, including non-Muslims who gather in homes for religious practice."

Sudan: A Muslim woman divorced her husband, a convert to Christianity, causing the court automatically to grant her custody of their two sons. When the father tried to visit his children, his wife threatened to notify authorities. "They might take the case to a prosecution court, which might lead to my sentencing to death according to Islamic apostasy law?but I am ready for this," said the Christian. "I want the world to know this. What crime have I done? Is it because I became a Christian? I know if the world is watching, they [Sudanese authorities] will be afraid to do any harm to me."

United States: Two Christian men in Saint Louis, Missouri received death threats from Iran?s Islamic Revolutionary Guard, apparently for converting to Christianity and preaching it. One of the men formerly served in the Revolutionary Guard and was once even assigned a suicide mission against Israel, before converting and immigrating to the U.S. "The two men believe that Islam is a religion that could easily radicalize a Muslim into a terrorist." Likewise, in Dearborn Michigan, Christian demonstrators exercising their free speech rights were stoned by Muslims shouting "Allahu Akbar!"

Dhimmitude

[General Abuse, Debasement, and Suppression of Non-Muslims as "Tolerated" Citizens]

Indonesia: "The number of violations of Christians? religious rights in Indonesia reached 40 in the first five months of the year, nearly two-thirds the amount of anti-Christian actions in all of last year," according to the Jakarta Christian Communication Forum. The Christian minority in Indonesia faced 64 cases of violations of religious freedom last year, up from 47 in 2010." Violence against Christians also increased.

Mali: "Islamists in control of northern Mali are enforcing a strict version of Sharia law that victimizes Christians, women and other vulnerable groups." The radicals took control of northern Mali in April after ousting the armed forces of the government. "All the Christians have left Timbuktu (the main city in north Mali) because of the Sharia law as well as because of the presence of people linked with al-Qaeda," said a Christian leader who fled from northern Mali.

Pakistan: Police are siding with the Muslims accused of beating a pregnant Christian woman, causing her to miscarriage twins, and gang-raping her 13-year-old Christian niece. "Muslim criminals believe police and courts will give little credence to the complaints of Christians in the country, which is nearly 96 percent Muslim," adds the report. The Christian family is "paying a huge price for being poor ? and for being Christian," said the uncle: "What can we expect from the police when they are not paying heed even to the court orders? They are distorting facts and have even gone to the extent of accusing a 13-year-old [raped girl] of committing adultery with three men." Another Christian politician?s ID mistook him for a Muslim, causing him to insist "on the floor of the Punjab Assembly that he was born a Christian and appealed to them and the media not to indulge in propaganda against him that could incite Muslim extremists to kill him."

South Africa: More than 70 students were kicked out of the Coastal KZN As-Salaam campus dormitories and are currently homeless, because campus officials tried to make them observe Islam, including by banning Bibles, which the students resisted. "All we wanted was to be free to practice our own religions and not be forced to follow Islam, but now we have been punished by being deprived of safe accommodation," said one student.

Turkey: Thousands of devout Muslims prayed outside Hagia Sophia?formerly Christendom?s greatest cathedral now a museum?shouting, "Allahu Akbar!" and demanding the building be opened as a mosque in honor of the jihadi sultan who conquered Constantinople in the 15th century.

About this Series

Because the persecution of Christians in the Islamic world is on its way to reaching epidemic proportions, "Muslim Persecution of Christians" was developed to collate some?by no means all?of the instances of persecution that surface each month. It serves two purposes:

  1. Intrinsically, to document that which the mainstream media does not: the habitual, if not chronic, Muslim persecution of Christians.
  2. Instrumentally, to show that such persecution is not "random," but systematic and interrelated?that it is rooted in a worldview inspired by Sharia.

Accordingly, whatever the anecdote of persecution, it typically fits under a specific theme, including hatred for churches and other Christian symbols; apostasy and blasphemy laws; sexual abuse of Christian women; forced conversions to Islam; theft and plunder in lieu of jizya (tribute); overall expectations for Christians to behave like cowed "dhimmis" (barely tolerated citizens); and simple violence and murder. Oftentimes it is a combination thereof.

Because these accounts of persecution span different ethnicities, languages, and locales?from Morocco in the west, to India in the east, and throughout the West, wherever there are Muslims?it should be clear that one thing alone binds them: Islam?whether the strict application of Islamic Sharia law, or the supremacist culture born of it.

These first alpha versions of Glass are only scheduled to ship early next year, but according to an email the Project Glass team just sent to everybody who pre-ordered the devices, the company plans to involve this early tester community before the devices ship as well. Google, the email says, will post exclusive content for those with pre-orders on Google+ and also invite them to special events and Google+ Hangouts with the Glass Team.

The New Trend in B2B Advertising Lead Generation | Business 2 ...

advertising lead generation

These three words/phrases are less likely to come together in a single sentence due to the fact that advertising is already closely related to generating leads. So in other words, it is a common misconception that advertising agencies no longer need to get help in search of getting qualified leads.

As a matter of fact, the advertising industry is one of the most ?in need? of assistance when it comes to generating business leads for their firms. Why? One word: Competition.

Competition between advertising firms has been noted to become very fierce. Quality advertising services offer long-term contracts to potential and existing clients. As such, many companies within the industry are hungry, starving even, for qualified, and even pre-qualified leads.

Many companies within the business sector implement their own brand of marketing for their services. Advertising companies use marketing mediums that are in sync with their specialty. Such mediums include the following:

  • Direct mail

  • Print ads/Flier distribution

  • Posters

  • On-line advertisements

  • On-line videos (i.e. Youtube, Vimeo)

  • Mass Media

  • Viral Marketing

Some or most of these methods work; some won?t. It?s just a matter of implementing a trial-and-error period for their b2b marketing. However, these companies don?t really have the luxury of time; especially if most of these methods require them to wait for the leads to come to them. So what they need is a more direct approach for their advertising lead generation campaign.

Today, many advertisers implement the use of cold calling and has now become a trend for generating leads. Though an outbound type of marketing, one can immediately get in touch with their targeted decision makers without having the hassle of waiting an immensely long time to touch base with their targeted markets.

Though a current trend, calling potential clients for advertising firms still require a learning curve that needs to be passed. As such, time is still needed to become an expert at this type of marketing medium. And again, time is not of the essence.

In order to hasten the generation of qualified business leads for advertising, and even shorten out the entire sales process, many companies within the sector will readily outsource their marketing to reputable call centers. Upon doing so, advertising companies can attain the level of expertise they need in a near instance. This negates the fact that the company still has to hire more employees for their marketing campaign and train them for the upcoming endeavor.

Professional telemarketers are known to call hundreds of potential and laser-targeted leads within a single day. Other benefits include cost effectiveness, expertise, and the guidance of a professional marketing analyst.

Advertising companies are advised to take speed into account whenever they start marketing for the generation of qualified leads for their business. Otherwise, competitors are sure to leave them in the dust and leave them hanging within inches of their business? life.
